Just made a visit to the board and saw all that's been happening. Prayers are going up, Rich. God has not moved his hand from Sophia and will continue to hold her -- and you -- up through these challenges.

Here's an update for all of you following along here ... the story I thought - or, had hoped - was over but refuses to go away:
To start with, the little one is relatively fine. Thank God! And, thanks to all of you. She does have - or had - a virus, undetermined, that may or may not have been either caused or "promoted" by her RSV inoculation about 2 weeks ago, or whenever it was. We don't know. The doctors don't know, but she did have a virus. The fever has broken, and the intestinal part of it has passed [literally] - they are basically just letting her ride it out & fight this thing, providing some respiratory treatments to facilitate her breathing by opening up the bronchial tubes, etc. As soon as the congestion clears, she returns home. Sophia is an unbelievable little trooper. She handles this all in stride & in relatively good humor. I have a special little girl here, if she can just have the chance to plant her feet firmly on the ground ... finally ...
Meanwhile, while there, she's had some tests/check-ups:
- Eye Examine - to occur later today. I expect her to pass that with flying colors. It's obvious she sees well.
- Swallowing test - she gags - dry heaves, basically, while & after feeding. At least some times ... we are trying to adjust the rate & frequency so that her little belly can handle it. Anyway, to be sure nothing was getting into her airways, she had this test. Failure would possibly have resulted in another surgical procedure to fix the last one. She passed!
- Ultra-sound on her lower spinal cord area. Some dimples appeared there which could be indicative of problems, but, there were no abnormalities.
Basically, she continues to hit every bump in the road, but beats them all, one at a time.
As they say here: Bless its heart! [I hate that they refer to her as an "it," but I guess it's just a figure of speech. ]
Meanwhile, meanwhile ... Mom stays in Asheville because of all the care she needs [we are trying to reduce the amount of food, but increase the frequency - so, she eats every 2 hours right now. The staff there in pediatrics can't handle that. I wish they allowed her to go back to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but alas ... no.] And, I stay at home presenting myself as a very poor imitation of Mr. Mom. Nobody gets any sleep, we're all worn out ... I'm using all my leave up rapidly, with no definite end in sight ... but, it's really about Sophia. It is she who suffers the most. We have to continue to remember that. She handles it all better than anyone!! She knows no defeat.
Can't go visit, cause the kids are mostly all home all day ... 5 of them , anyway ... and the big boys are never home, between school & work. So, I miss her and spend time staring at her pics and praying for her young life to finally right itself. I ask myself "how much more can she stand?" Really, I hate to be melodramatic, but it just seems so unfair for one completely innocent & pure little person to have to bear all of this ... it's all she's known. I simply want her to know some good stuff!
Anyway, that's the report. Despite my gloominess, it's really quite bright! The only thing is, we still don't know how much longer she'll have to stay. I'm just worn out in every way imaginable. Waaa ... waa ... waaa ... who's the baby, anyway?!?
The Nolichucky had nothing on this!
And, I never did get my Easter pic!

Thanks so much for the update on your little angel. I am happy to hear that she is on the mend!!! Thank God for answered prayers!
I can imagine that this is quite tough for the rest of the family and trying to be Mr. Mom can't be easy! Goodness, you'll need a vacation after that! :) Anyhow we'll continue praying for all of you that things will also go smooth at home! |

Addendum: She aced the eye exam. The Retinologist says he's done with her. No problems!
Oh ... her hand/eye coordination is rapidly improving ... For those of you who've had children, she's at the holding-her-hands-in-front-of-her-face-&-staring-at-them stage. Much to her delight, she has discovered that the hands are part of her. She sees things and grabs 'em.
Unfortunately, it's all wires & stuff right now! |

Well, well ... Sophia is a-coming home today!
Amazing - unbelievable, really - how this little person has turned our [everyone's] entire life completely upside down.
But, Sophia, it's all been emphatically worthwhile ... you are one special little daughter & I'm planning on spoiling you rotten ... so keep that in mind when you're all grown-up. Everyone is not going to treat you this way!!! And, oh joy! The doctor says we can expect that this viral adventure might reoccur within the next year! Part of the territory, I guess ...
And, on that note - unless something utterly out of this world occurs, I'm going to end this saga ... If you'd like to share a last thought or message with her, please do it soon.
In a couple or three days, I'm going to lock the thread, print it, laminate it, and save it for Sophia RosaMaria to one day read - a neat little chronicle of her tumultuous early life.
Perhaps, I'll no longer be here when you do finally chance to read it, Sophie, but know this - I've never loved anything like I've loved you. You have touched me & taught me; you are my life's gift.

Sophia, Our little angel of Mohicanland, it has been quite a journey... full of scary times, full of joyous times, and definitely full of miracles. You will never know how many people were praying for you, and for your family. You will never know how many people cried in front of their computers while reading the latest news about you. You will never meet many of us, but we feel that we know you and that you are a part of us all.
You are loved. You are special. You are a Miracle Child. I believe that the Lord has very wonderful plans for you! God Bless you, Sophia!

To Sophia ,
You have profoundly affected all of our lives here in Mohicanland. Thank you for reminding us the power of prayer. Thank you for bringing a smile on our faces. Thank you for being a shining light during a dark time. I have no doubt that God has a definite plan for you. You are a strong and determined player in this game we call life. I look forward to the day when we can meet. We all love you very much.

Wow you learn something new everyday on here! Congratulations Rich on the new arrival. I almost fell out of my chair when I read that you have 10 kids! Wow. My mum has six and I thought that was a lot. Being a newcomer on here and all I was wondering if any of your family goes to the Mohican Gatherings? None the less I am happy for you and excited to see everyone next year. |

Yep, Rachel ... 10 of 'em ... and each special in their own way ...
Alrighty then, here's the final last update on Sophia!
Really, a wonder! I get to thinking that perhaps she was released from the hospital just a wee bit too soon the first time. After her second stay [where, like she did on the NICU ward, she charmed them all in pediatrics!], she is noticeably stronger & better. She laughs & smiles all the time, loves to be held, thoroughly enjoys all the fussing going on all around her.
Yesterday, she was like a little princess ... bathing & receiving her nebulizer treatment [her newest fad - she came home this time from the hospital with this contraption that blows medicated smoke for her breathing. Looks like a witch's brew to me!], crowd gathered around her ... she was loving every minute of it. And, she deserves every bit of pampering she can get.
Her voice is getting stronger, little by little, but her cry still sounds more like a whimper than a true cry - the cutest thing. I hate to keep boasting of this girl, but this thread has been a part of my therapy through this ordeal. Everyone - I mean everyone - falls in love with this girl. Everyone who meets her is charmed by her. She is remarkable, and quite "famous" at Asheville's Memorial Mission Hospital. At least on the 3rd & 6th floors! All the staff knows Sophia ... Literally, she had a stream of visitors during her stay there last week!
Image Insert:
23.77 KB Sophia on April 28
This, I guess, is her farewell [for now] pic, as she retreats to a new life of privacy ...
One other thing ... it's been an eye-opener to finally get all the hospital's staff's real feelings on Sophia's stay at the NICU ward for those 6 eternally long months. They now speak more freely, and most of them now admit that they never thought she would make it. But for one time - and then only hinted at, back in January - that was never projected by the staff to us. They hid it well! To a man [and woman], they consider her a miracle. She was so close, so often ... just teetering at the brink of death's door. Every time I gaze at her, I think of how lucky we all are; I think of how frantically the hospital workers strived to keep her alive; I think of what could have been ...
She is our miracle, in the truest sense.
One nurse wrote an absolutely gut-wrenchingly beautiful letter - 3 pages worth - for Sophia to one day read. Sophia has so touched folks in that way!
Another recently recounted this to us:
As she went in & out of consciousness - her heart slowing down to dramatically, and dangerously slow levels; her breathing ceasing altogether - we had to bring her back so often. We got to saying that Sophia liked meeting Jesus so much that she kept wanting to go back & meet him again.
In due time, sweet Sophia ... in due time ...
