| No muskets, something much more terrible. A WIFE!!! She does not go to a movie without a large bucket of buttered popcorn, and of course if you eat popcorn you have to have a large drink. I have bought a bottle of wine for less than they charge for a large drink. All that costs much more than the price of admission. That is why we have more cable TV channels that I can count. Before long it will be on one of them, and I can curl up with a Yuengling and a slice of pizza and watch it at home. |

Try a Saturday matinée, Fitz. Some theaters offer discounts on the eats. I know there's a movie house in Asheville - where I sometimes bring my kids - and I leave with a dollar or two still in my pocket.
Anyway, about this movie ... pretty decent reviews & Number 1 at the Box Office. I probably won't get to see it till the DVD-release, but have ANY of you seen it? |

Yes, I saw Apocalypto - twice. I also thought it was brilliant, albeit very bloody in some scenes - I closed my eyes when they were on - hearing what was happening was enough for me.
Rudy Youngblood, a newcomer who played the leading man, Jaguar's Paw, was wonderful, really carried the movie very well, and is also very easy on the eyes. I'd love to see him become a big star.

I just saw it yesterday and all I can say is brilliant. Mel does it yet again with his directing skills. This was a nice break from the usual run of the mill Hollywood predictable movies. Definitely different.
I love the opening scene where we got to "know" the characters and care about them so that when the "worst" happened we were rooting for them. It was all suspense and action from the word go and any violence in the movie was necessary to accurately portray what was taking place. I have seen more needless violence in lots of other movies like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the "Saw" movies. This was a great piece of work and I recommend it to anyone who wants a truly great, different kind of movie. Well worth my money and I would love to go see it again. Anyone who boycotts this movie because Mel directed it is stupid. It is a masterpiece and the camera work was excellent. How did he do it with all the chase scenes and the Jaguar scene. Amazing, simply amazing. Enough said. Go see it.
Oh yes Rita I agree about Rudy. Great acting by him and all the other "unknowns". Lots of gorgeous Native men in this one ladies even one whom I though looked like Eric Schweig but that was just my opinion. The one who could not get his wife to conceive and who ate the hog's unmentionables at the beginning. I really liked him (must be the Eric resemblance) and was rooting for him all the way. Wish they could all become big stars and Jaguar's father Flint Sky, well really liked him too. |

There is a movie from the mid 60's called "The Naked Prey" set in Africa where a group of men on a safari are captured by some tribesmen who make each one of them meet a gruesome end but the final guy is stripped naked and one of the tribesmen shoots an arrow and where it lands that is his headstart. Then he runs for his life pursued by about 6 to 8 tribesmen after his blood. Reminded me of the chase in "Apocalypto" when I saw the movie last month. Wonder in the back of Mel's mind someplace was this movie and the idea for the "footchase". Great movie "The Naked Prey" for anyone who wishes to see it. It stars Cornell Wilde. Anyone else seen it just out of curiousity

"The Naked Prey" is one of my all time favorites. I originally saw it at the show when it 1st came out. I believe it was originally based on a old short story, written by a famous author whose name escapes me at the moment. |

Too bad they didn't put in a scene in LOTM of Uncas being chased naked   through the forest by Magua  . Now there's a sight to see    |

You have to hand it to Mel Gibson; he sure doesn't shy away from the BIG projects. I mean he's directed 3 movies [that I am aware of anyway] - Braveheart, The Passion, and now this ... Apocalypto. No small feat ...
Let's get it over with right now ... there truly are a lot of butts in this movie ... NA MEN [as they are referred to here  ] BUTTS, too ... a few women's breasts, but mainly NA men butts ... hundreds of them.
Oh, the movie ...
Six Degrees? You got it!
Opens with The Elk Hunt, with a twist ... this time it's a tapir hunt. Follows with a scene or two of absolutely delightful banter among the tribesmen [reminiscent of Cameron's Cabin] ... Then, there's the cutting out of hearts, cliff trails, captives, over the falls, last second rescues [ala Hawkeye at Massacre Valley], bodies falling through the air to their deaths, and running ... lots of running ... I was losing my breath just watching. Even a Magua-type.
Other than that, it was more Braveheart than Last of the Mohicans, although one could argue the end was similar to that of LOTM ... The Last of Whatever Tribe That Was ... The Mayans were the bad guys, I'm not sure what tribe Jaguar Paw was from.
A bit of a fairy tale ending, perhaps, but I really liked the movie. A different take on the subject matter than I had expected. Nice touch with the Spanish ships ... There is one scene where I was reminded of Wallace at the torture rack in Braveheart ... this time, though, the character ... well, I don't want to spoil anyone's viewing. You'll have to see.
There are some gory scenes, lots of action, and quite a bit of excellent character interactions, causing it to stand apart from most other films of this genre ... Another one of those chick flicks that us guys can enjoy, too! Actually, it is more of a Man Movie than a Chick Flick. Yeah ... there is some romance ... even humor, but the film is anything but funny.

Glad you enjoyed it Rich. I thought you would. Great movie and those NA butts make it even more fun to watch.
Jaguar Paw and his father Flint Sky reminded me of Uncas and Chingachkook only this time with a different "outcome". I thought "Blunted" looked a bit like Eric Schweig. Anyone else think this or am I just plain crazy? |

| Hey, just watched Apocalypto tonight! It was awesome! I like to watch movies with blood and gore, so this was right up my alley. Mel Gibson is a great director and has come out with some wonderful movies. I hope to see more from him in the future. I would have to agree with Richfed, it does seem to follow the LOTM theme. Weird. OH, and lots of eye candy, can't forget that! The one thing that made me sad during the movie, what is going to happen to the baby jagaur since his mommy got killed? Kinda sad. |

[rant=on]HOWEVER...the PC term "NA men" really irritates me. What's with this "Native American" nonsense?  I'm just as much a "Native American" as Wes Studi, Russell Means, Eric Whatshisface, or whoever. (After all, I was born in the Western Hemisphere.) If ya'll mean "American Indian" then use the term "AI Men!"[rant=off]

| The term "Native American" is offensive to many. I have heard "First Peoples", but that is really an incorrect term. I have heard "First Nations" which seems more accurate. I have always liked "Sauvage", but many of the lesser educated equate this with "savage". Another term which is good is "Amerindian" which speaks for itself. Some use the abbreviation "NDN". |

| Even Russell Means agrees with you on that, Obediah! I think it is only a small percentage of American Indians who vocally demand the use of "Native Americans". I remember out on the reservations of South Dakota there was no problem with the use of the term "Indian" among the traditionalists. In fact, they call themselves just that! |
