The Niece and Nephew had traveled to the Allemaengel with Dr. Uncle Mark to celebrate the 250th anniversary. Dressed in their little colonial outfits and Dr. Uncle dressed as Many Flags, they arrived and instantly were welcomed by the other Uncle and the Cousin. They gave Dr. Uncle and the Niece and Nephew hugs, ushering them under the fly for the sky was dripping drops, although in a pleasant manner.
The other Uncle was dressed as Three Tales and of course the Cousin was dressed as Seamus. Also present was Two Bottle and her children, Flags’ and Tales’ nephew Half Breed, Friend Timothy, and many other reenactors who had come to participate in the festivities.
The public began to arrive and were awed when they met descendants of the German Immigrant who was still well-known in the Allemaengel because of his protection of the inhabitants 250 years earlier. Representatives of the Creitz family, the Bailey family, the Brobst family, the Kistler family and others were there and they greeted Flags and Tales as neighbors, after more than 250 years. And also present was.....GADGET GIRL, all the way from the southern Colonies to reacquaint herself with the lads of the Chronicles.
The celebration really got underway as the reenactment of “Raid on the Allemaengel” took place. Hiram and Hannah (the Niece and Nephew) were chased by French renegades and Indians and as they made their way to the cabin which was protected by other “settlers”. Flags and Tales came upon the attack and “gave fire” to push the enemy away from the settlers. Seamus led his Pennsylvania troops to the final rescue. But, as the Indians and French faded into the distant, it was realized that they had captured a young lass and the troops formed up to reenact the parlay to gain her release.
The march to the Native American village located along Pine Creek under the 300 year old sycamore was solemn. As the scout, Many Flags trailed along, at times ahead and times alongside Seamus’s troops. As they entered the village a murmur from the Natives unnerved the large group of public and the Indian leader, Many Faces arose to meet the white people.
Gifts were given to the Natives for the safe return of the captive, who sat solemnly among the other women, now adopted into the Native clan and dressed in Native clothing. Many Faces addressed the Black Robe who conducted the parlay, while Flags and Seamus sat quietly keeping their thoughts to themselves, void of all weapons which had been left with the troops standing behind them.
Expecting the Natives to accept the gifts and the young girl to happily return to the white people, the whole gathering was surprised when, as the women asked her what SHE wanted, the young girl replied, “My father is now dead. This is my new family.” Weeping with joy, the Native women shielded the young girl with their feather fans, Many Faces asked the Black Robe, Many Flags and Seamus not to have animosity against the Native tribes for “it is our new family member’s decision to stay with us”. The troops gathered up their weapons and peace reigned between the whites and Natives of the Allemaengel.
Both reenactments, the Raid and the Parlay, were scenes that could never be replayed. They simply “occurred” and as Many Flags left the Native village, a shiver ran up his spine as he felt the presence of his ancestor the German immigrant, his sons Christian and Michael, and all the other folks who now lay in the family graveyard on the hillside of the Hagenbuch farm.
And, on the next day, the pilgrimage was made to the graveyard, with all in tow: Many Flags, Three Tales and Seamus, Two Bottle and the Children and Half Breed; a pilgrimage to the sacred ground. They silently stood looking at the seven odd hunks of stone which marked the graves of Andreas, his son Michael, their wives and other family members, the earliest settlers of the Allemaengel, now nestled in the bowels of the earth with the Blue Mountains overlooking

We had a fine time in Berks County....and we had a wonderful visit with "Gadget Girl" and Jordan and Neal. Only wish we would have had more time. The trip to the Homestead was very fullfilling, and gave the young ones their first sight of the double stone house that was built by Michael Hagenbuch in 1851. The stop at the cemetary was a must to reacquaint ourselves with the spirits of the first Hagenbuchs in America.

IT WAS great to see the "MacWilliam Boys" again. Speaking of boys...I swear you guys looked 5 years younger - must have been the fact that you hadn't driven hours and hours like the first time we met. You all looked GREAT!!

I LOVED my first reenactment experience. The sound of the muskets firing added so much to the event - really put you in the moment. So much so...that when Many Flags falls, I screamed out "OH NOooooooo!" You know like in a movie theatre you hollar out and then scrunch down in your seat because it's obvious to all that you have no control over yourself! You fellows must remember too, that I know you SO MUCH better as the Tales characters, than your real present day selves. It was a bit surreal during that moment. Then "magic" Three Tales rushes over and low and behold, Flags is up and moving to safety! YAY!!!!!!!!!

Later, we rode a steam engine down to the Indian Village part of the reenactment where we were able to look over artifacts and displayed items while waiting for the Parlay to occur. At this time I got a more up close look at the unusual appearing Indian fellow I had noticed earlier, Many Faces! He is quite eye catching up close with all the "stuff" he had on. But do tell the dear "LEAN" Many Faces he may benefit from eating Many Dinners!!

We then watched as the English arrived...drums pounding, offered gifts to the Indians, smoked the peace pipe, and left...drums pounding, having come to an understanding about the settler girl they had come to negotiate release of.

We returned to the Camp area to chat a bit before heading to a Celtic Festival Concert. The troops readied themselves for dinner as we said our goodbyes. While we were leaving, Three Tales pulled from the cook fire what looked at first like small chunks of wood...then we realized they were chunks of meat!!! AS we left, my daughter and her friend said, "Did you see what they were getting ready to eat!? Next time we're hanging around for dinner!!" The kids had a blast, BTW!

The next morning we headed to Gettysburg and then Antietam (can't accuse me of not S-Q-E-E-Z-I-N' every ounce out of a weekend trip!!). Of course, we didn't spend near enough time in Gettysburg (another day), but I was most moved by the scenery of the Antietam Battlefield in the twilight, looking over the fields and rolling hills of the western Maryland, with the trees just beginning to unfold their colors. Such bloodshed on such breathtaking scenery!!! And having just experienced a reenacted battle made the feeling so much more chilling! I definitely got the feeling something really awful had happened there!

To back up a bit, we also enjoyed the LOVELY hills of the Allemaengel. Very beautiful country - I can certainly see why Andreas and his family chose this beautiful area! We got a bit lost trying to find Kempton, but were happy to view the Pennsylvania Blue Mountain area with all its unique, splendid architecture and the colorful Hex Signs on so many buildings.

Thank You MacWilliams for making our whirlwind weekend such a memory!!

Diana - GG

For those interested I have added to my Photo Album some pics of the event. Look under the MISSPELLED heading of Allemangael

NOTE: They'll be back up shortly!!! ... RF

The pleasure is all ours, GG! We were thrilled that you, your daughter and her friend were able to be with us, if only for a brief time. It was wonderful to see you again!

Tell the young'uns that the meat they saw cooking was "out-of-this-world"!!!!!! .....and we are glad you enjoyed yourselves.
