I'm new to the board, although I've used the website frequently in the past. I'm sure everyone would have to agree that Rich deserves a lot of thanks (as well as Elaine) for putting everything together for us. After recently ordering the book, and with a weekend of my Spring Break demanding a quick vacation, I decided to go down to North Carolina. Keep in mind that I'm from New Jersey, apprx. 11 hours away. A bit of an intense drive when you don't trust your passenger with driving your car. Anyway, I didn't get the chance to do very much, but it's enough to scratch the surface as well as to give me more reason to come back sooner.
I stayed in Asheville at the Quality Inn on Tunnel Rd. Though I didn't take the time to visit the rest of Asheville, I spent the time at Chimney Rock Park, Linville Falls, and Lake James. The first day was spent going to Chimney Rock. My friend Jason and I bought the annual pass in case we came back again the same trip. Sadly, we did not. Even more sad was that due to a health condition, I wasn't able to make it to all the trails when we went (it was about 82 degrees and rather humid for early March). I had to settle for some views from the Chimney and the Hickory Nut Falls Trail. I managed to get some pictures of the clearing where the Huron village once was, and some general shots of the surrounding area. Being a bit of a miserable experience for me given the health problem, I decided we should leave and head for Linville Falls. Thanks to both the guide book and my GPS (a life saver on a trip like this where I wasn't always sure where I wanted to go), we found the parking area no problem. I wasn't aware of it at the time, but we were passing the scene where Alice says "may we rest soon?" where there's a small clearing with stumps in the woods. I didn't get any photos of that, but I did of the Ambush scene. I didn't find the EXACT location with the fallen tree and the stump, but did find some that were close. From the two overlooks I took some nice photos of the falls as the sun was beginning to go down. That more or less was the end of the first day.
Day two was spent over at Lake James before heading back to Jersey. It was on the way back, so I figured an hour there would be great. Finding the location was no problem with the aid of the GPS and book. I took some panoramic shots of the lake and the hill where the fort was. Also got some of the "cove" where the canoes scene was shot. I wasn't in the mood to expore the hill where Rich said the foundations of the fort are visible, so I left it at that.
Like I said, all the more reason to come back in a month or two! One thing I have noticed is that there aren't any GPS coordinates of the locations. Understandably not everyone has access to this, but it would be a great feature. Especially since you can find the coordinates by navigating to the location on a map, there are plenty of benefits to having this data available! Just a small suggestion for the site and/or book in the future. Seems easier than hanging a right turn at a dumpster as I recall in one segment of the directions. ;D

Also, while I was in the area the Blue Ridge Parkway was detoured from Asheville to US-221 I believe. Not sure why, but I couldn't get to the Greenknob Overlook as I had hoped or a trip to Mount Mitchell. Minor setbacks, of course. :D |

Very interesting pictures, Rich!!! Thanks for sharing your exoerience with us. I remember may years ago ('92 or '93) setting out to find the locations myself. I have been in love with area ever since then. Fortunately, I grew up near there, so I have been many times since then. You would REALLY enjoy our gathering in June!!!
Last year, the leaning tree was STILL over the trail at Linville Falls. It is the MOST obvious landmark from the movie on that trail, SOOOO...if you did not see it, it must have fallen in the last year. 
The fort scene at Lake James was beginning to be covered with new trees when we went back in the early 90's, so I am sure that site is completely covered with forestation now. Rather unrecognizable compared to the boat launch scenes, the cove, and of course THE ISLAND.
Thanks again - I really enjoyed reliving your "discovery" of the area with you!!!!

Very nice job!
I especially enjoyed seeing the blooper page. Not having the keenest eyes, I have only been able to spot the blue cap. Couldn't, for the life of me, see either the buses or the moving "rock."

Looking at those photos yesterday morning, I had noticed that it appeared you were in the right spot [The Ambush] and yet I saw no overhanging tree ... is it really gone? Man, that site will not be the same!!!
Also, at Lake James, it appeared the trees were trimmed a bit up on the fort site ... guess I'll have to get off my arse & look around again ... |

Well about the Ambush, I could have been off by as little as 10 feet. I was looking for that tree but I only noticed 2 much smaller overhanging trees. I didn't notice the stump on the other side either, so chances are I didn't have the exact spot. The sun was setting quickly and I was trying to get to the falls ASAP before I ran out of light for photos. Oh.. actually I do remember the tree (if it is the same one). On the way down the path there was a large tree which fell across the path that everyone had to climb over (a real chore for some). It was near the parking lot, so that might be it. The photos I have are from near the spot the path splits to go to the falls and to go to the overlooks. The tree will probably be removed since it blocks the path so I'd suggest you hurry up and check it out! |

Rich,
What a great little group of pics you took! It has never ceases to amaze me how this movie has inspired so many of us to search out the sites. I remember very well, sitting in a library back pre-computer era, trying to figure out where Chimney Rock Park was in North Carolina; and what exactly was "The Biltmore" ... being in a smallish Northern California town library was no help, either. The Internet was a great help; LOTM was the first thing I "googled" which led me to Rich's site; and to his book purchase. And to the rest of the craziness. Anyway, thanks for sharing your pics; and I have also stayed in that Quality Inn on Tunnel Road in Asheville. Hope you get a chance to see the rest of the sites from the book.
