(Small one is what my daughter was stung by in the Arizona room ... the large one we found later outside imbedded in the stone wall)

I pray to God that you never have to go through what we just did.

On Thursday evening around 8pm my oldest daughter got stung by a bark scorpion - from my understanding they are probably the most dangerous of all the scorpions. We immediately called Poison Control and they told us the possible symptoms and said they would call back within the hour. Their venom is like a nerve agent and is very painful. It causes one to hallucinate, the skin to feel like it is on fire, the tongue and eyes to bounce around, and the body to twitch out of control. Within 30 minutes, signs of symptoms set in when my daughter started screaming she couldn't see. Poison Control advised us to take her immediately to the ER.

We spent 8 hours in the ER before they took her in an ambulance to the Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Phoenix Hospital. We then learned she had received a severe dosage of the toxin. Poor thing spent the next two nights in ICU. They put so much medicine in that little body. It was unreal. An adult would have been asleep, but she was up for over 14 hours the first night!

Good news is that she has pulled through like a trooper and is all set to celebrate her 5th year birthday party which we had to postpone because of all of this. I guess I just wanted to write this all down because I was so numb throughout the whole ordeal. It really didn't hit me that I could have lost her until after we came home. I have so much admiration for Rich who had to wait for months with his little Sophia - I don't know how you did it.

Hug your family a little tighter each day... you never know. I just thank the angels that were watching over my little one...

Caitlin,

What did you mean by "the Arizona room" - was that in your house???

My Mom grew up in Texas and she shared her fear of scorpions once and I have been petrified of them since then. Ironically - I am just now watching the Scorpian King - YIKES!!!

SO SO SO glad to hear your little one is OK!! Poor little thing! Is there a way to exterminate against those? That picture is frightening!!! I hope she never has to go through anything like that again! YOW!

Caitlin,
I am so sorry that y'all had to go through that terrible ordeal!!! You were probably alot more composed then I would have been!!! Those scorpions look scarey looking. You know, when I was a teenager, I lived in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona for a couple of years and luckily never ran into one of those ugly looking things!!!
Tell your little one that I said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!", even if it is a little late.

Love,
Kay

Caitlin,
Wow what an ordeal. I guess every region in the country has its dangers. I'm glad to hear she pulled through but it must have been so frightening for you. This will make her birthday celebration even more special!!!!!!!!!

Holy Cow!

OK. Between the scorpions and the rattlesnakes... don't think I would want to live in Arizona. Yep. I like it just fine here in New York where all we have to worry about is blizzards!

I am very, very glad your little one is OK. Scary, scary stuff.....

Thank God your daughter is OK! And you sound like you're getting better, too! What a scare!

Those scorpions give me the heebie-jeebies. Seeing nasty critters such as those makes it hard to love all of God's creatures! But thanks to hurricanes and scorpions and other such things, I will keep a healthy respect and fear of Nature!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. It really means a lot.

GG - An Arizona room is basically an enclosed porch. You can get all sorts of critters in there - once we even found a Road Runner! The bark scorpians are the worst. Not only are they the most toxic, they can climb walls. I actually found one climbing the wall in our hallway one night. I agree with Dances, I definitely have a much higher respect for nature.
