Yep, and not only a web site contributor, but also a Gathering contributor, helping out - no questions asked - with Ariel's Auction several years in a row. Oh, not to mention an all-around great guy.

H. David Wright provides the E-mail of the Week:

To my friends,

Some of you have already received an earlier missive from me telling you about my Emmy nomination for Art Direction on the History Channel's Primetime Special last year "First Invasion - The War of 1812".

Now that I have received the official notification from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the invitation to the Awards, and since this is an unusual (and unexpected) honor to come into my life - I wish to share it with you at this time.

Now first of all, this is only a nomination - haven't won yet - that will be determined on this coming Sunday night, Sept. 11.

When I received the phone call about being nominated, it was the furtherest thing in my mind and I didn't give it much thought. However, the more I talked with friends and other people in the business - they felt that just receiving a nomination is a rare and unique happening. So I'm beginning to realize it may be a bigger deal than I first thought.

This is just one more aspect of life in which to partake, to bask in the '15 minutes of fame' - to enjoy the moment. Whether I win or lose probably won't change my life in any way - if we're lucky enough to bring home to Gallatin one of those "Emmy Statuettes" - great, so be it, - if not, so be it as well. Life will go on in Gallatin as it has before.

Jane and I have decided to fly out to LA on Saturday, the 10th, for the Awards ceremonies and the "Gala Ball" on Sunday night, the 11th. I'll fly back home on Monday with Jane flying on to Dallas for one of her shows, so it will be a rush trip. While there, we'll meet up with our friends, (and producers/director) Gary Foreman and Carolyn Raine and take in all the affairs - a reception hosted by the Academy for the nominees, along with the History Channel execs taking us all to dinner on Saturday night, then on Sunday night the Awards, followed by a "Gala Ball", so it will be a frenetic weekend, I'm sure. To make the most of the trip, we hope to even get to the Autry Museum and see some great western art while there.

Gary Foreman and Carolyn Raine are the owners of award winning Native Sun Productions. Gary and I both worked on Last of the Mohicans in ' 91. They are both the producers of their films and Gary also directs the films. Most of their productions are historical in subject and they have done numerous productions for the History Channel, as well other clients. I've worked on 5 films with them and it's a pleasure to work with both of them, since they are both tremendously talented people who have a deep interest in our American history. They have won a number of various awards throughout their careers, the most recent being the Western Heritage Award for best documentary "Daniel Boone and the Western Movement" (I worked on this one as art director) which was produced for the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park visitor center.

Working as an AD on these films has extended my knowledge of art into this venue, gives me a different view of the field, and I feel has even helped me with my approach to my painting American history. When all has settled down, rest assured that I'll be back in the studio painting again and following the career that I have laid down for many years now.

Attached is the press release that my good friend and publicist Flavil Van Dyke drafted for release to the news media, with several photos included, too (and also a copy of the invitation that shows the Emmy statuette). The PR release is in a Word Document which should be easy to open and the photos are JPEGs. Just wanted to share the moment with you.
