Just about my favorite show of all that is currently on TV is Ty Pennington's (pant - pant) show, Extreme Makeover, Home Edition. I really enjoy curling up with a cup of coffee and a box of Kleenex to watch this show. Any other fans out there?
Next Sunday will be the season finale, with a 2-hour special. It begins at 7 PM Eastern time, on ABC. The family who will receive a new home is a very special one. Remember Lori Piestewa? She was the young Navajo woman who was in the same convoy ambush in Iraq as Jessica Lynch and the two were best friends. Lori was killed. Jessica nominated Lori's family for the home makeover and they were chosen.
This promises to be a good show. If you've never watched... now is the time!

WW, Yes, I watched it last night. What I love about the show is that they pick families that really deserve to have their house redone. Of course, I boo-hooed last night along with everybody else. I think that I am going to buy stock in Kleenex since I use enough of them when I watch my shows. I love the guy Paul, on the show. If he starts crying, then I am right behind him.

This is one of the very, very few reality shows I can tolerate. Even I need the kleenex once in awhile. |

Sorry you missed it, Christina. It was, as I expected it would be, an exceptional show. I think this episode ranks as my favorite now.
For those of you who didn't watch it, do try to catch it on rerun. Here is a little of what happened. (Christina, spoiler alert! Don't read on if you want to be surprised later!)
Jessica Lynch was present with the TV design crew during the entire week, from the beginning when they are all on the bus and Ty is telling them about the family, to the very end reveal. She is quite close to Lori's family and they obviously adore her.
Lori's parents and her two children were living on the Navajo/Hopi Reservation in a trailer that they owned, but on land they did not own. So the house could not be built where the trailer was. They indicated to Ty that they would like to retire near Flagstaff, AZ, so the program staff went looking for land. They found a gorgeous 5-acre piece of land with mountains nearby, and a Native tribe in California sponsored the purchase. There was a beautiful Native ceremony, the Eagle dance, to bless the land before it was used.
The house was gorgeous, of course. The interior design was based on the Hopi culture (which Lori's family is... not Navajo, as I had thought). The family had quite a collection of Hopi artwork... Kachina dolls, sand paintings, dream catchers, basketry, etc., which was all incorporated into the design. Native artisans donated lovely items. The parents also had many, many things that people had sent to them after Lori was killed in action. The design team created a special little room to display all the lovely pictures, letters, and other mementos they had received. Of course, special bedrooms for the kids: a princess room, complete with a coach-bed for little Carla and a Lego room for the boy, whose name I can't remember.
Meanwhile, back on the Reservation... Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Some of the designers went back to the reservation to build a new center for all Native American Veterans, past and present. They brought in a modular building and created a beautiful place where the veterans could gather. They had some tribal men build a hogan, which is a place where warriors go to be spiritually cleansed after battle.
They talked with two wonderful old gentlemen who were Code Talkers during WWII. One old gentleman was present on Iwo Jima. A featured display in the center was several large photos of Navajo Code Talkers at work. It was so moving, I blubbered. I am so pleased that these men are finally, after so many years, being recognized and honored for what they did. They are so proud of it, and rightly so!
Again... don't miss it when it is rerun.
Other favorite families of mine: Sweet Alice, the black woman in Watts, LA, who is single-handedly saving a neighborhood; the adorable little girl who had cancer, who asked only for a cheery re-design of the children's hospital cancer ward where she had been a patient... but whose family was surprised with an entire new house as well; the deaf couple who have a blind, autistic son and a wonderful 15-year old son who has his whole world on his shoulders and holds it up with more strength than many adults. This family got a state-of-the-art house that would make conversation and monitoring their blind son so much easier, and Stephen got a full college scholarship.
Yep. Kleenex time. |

Hi WW, Yes, I watched it and yes, I had my kleenex box out. This show really and truly does some wonderful things for these families.
The deaf couple who have a blind, autistic son and a wonderful 15-year old son who has his whole world on his shoulders and holds it up with more strength than many adults.
This was one of my favorites. You could tell that this boy loved his brother VERY much!!! He was a truly remarkable young man!!! I loved the whole family.
