I dont know if this subject has been covered before but after reading some other posts, I was wondering if all Mohican fans had other film favouites in common? My favourites are LOTM (obviously), The Horse Whisperer and Pride & Prejudice (British tv version). I have restricted myself to three otherwise it could go on forever!

Just a bit of fun - a quiet day at work for me (I wish).

Ellie :)

Its been covered before, but that's OK - there's always new folks - not to mention new movies!

So - we're only picking 3, right? Well, my first two are easy: The Last of the Mohicans and Lonesome Dove ... strand me on a deserted island & I'll be fine ... with those two films!!! The third is a little harder ... difficult to pick the last one ... Braveheart? ... maybe ... Gladiator? ... maybe ... Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein - or just about any of their movies, actually ... maybe ... Meet Joe Black?, Rob Roy?, The Wizard of Oz?, Pearl Harbor? ... no, not that one ... Bonnie & Clyde?, ... Zulu?, ... HELP ... I don't know!!! How about I pick just two ...

At the risk of being branded a heretic (at least at this site), my all time favorite is that other F&I War movie, NORTHWEST PASSAGE. If I were doing an all-time top ten, there would be a tie for first of NWP and ROB ROY. Third place would go to JEREMIAH JOHNSON. Then, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, THE WIND AND THE LION, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. There are still three openings in the all time list. LOTM would be in the honorable mentions (unnumbered), along with Zefferelli's JESUS OF NAZARETH, ROMEO AND JULIET, BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON, SWEET LIBERTY, and probably several others.

Rich - ever watched ZULU DAWN and ZULU back to back? I did it a few weeks ago. It's a trip!

Rich, you and Claude have the same taste in movies. Lonesome Dove is his all-time favorite. I gave him the book for Christmas and he said it was almost exactly the same as the movie. We both love Robert Duvall. He was also good in Tender Mercies. And, of course, Jeremiah Johnson is also a favorite.

Jeremiah Johnson is wonderful! I have been trying to get the soundtrack for years but with no luck, I dont even know if it exists. Robert Redford was divine in that film... mmmmm. I had to restrict myself to three but there is no limit really.

Yep! Have done just that. A grand historical & movie experience!!! How about throwing in Shaka Zulu right before it all?!? Not that I've ever attempted that, mind you ...

Absolutely was!!! Never have I seen a film so true to the book!!! I knew there was a very good reason I like Claude so much!!!

I can relate ... I can relate!!!! Excellent movie, too!!! In fact, reminds me of another Nicholson film [his first, in fact] that ranks among my favorites ... Easy Rider. Others, I've thought of: The Alamo [John Wayne] & Thirteen Days to Glory, Alien & Aliens [though I strongly suspect they originated from another of my favorite all-timers, It: The Terror From Beyond Space [from the 50s!], Glory, and maybe, just maybe, The Sound of Music.

So, Jimbo, what are yours, anyway?

I'd have to find a place for "The Ghost and the Darkness" in there somewhere. I don't know what it is about this movie, but I have to watch it everytime it's on TV. I draw the line at German TV though, since they don't subtitle, but have Germans speak the dialogue in German. It just kills any movie, no matter how good it is.

Ellie,

There was a JEREMIAH JOHNSON soundtrack released. It is incredible - not only the music, but several scenes of dialog. I don't think it's ever been released on cd, but it should be.

My absolute all-time favorite movie is The Last of the Mohicans, of course! I'm going to watch it again tomorrow night, as a matter of fact! Anybody else planning on doing the same? We could all start our DVD's or VHS tapes at the same time and have sort of a virtual Gathering & viewing of the film!

Other favorites are mostly vintage classics, and I list these in no particular order: Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, The African Queen, Casablanca, The Ten Commandments, West Side Story, The King and I, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, White Christmas, pretty much every Western film that John Wayne ever made (yes, John Wayne!)...Some from more recent years include Dances With Wolves, The Way We Were, A Star Is Born, Steel Magnolias - and then there are all of those great Disney movies, both animated and not animated! Bambi, Fantasia, Old Yeller, Mary Poppins, Snow White ...Will somebody please pass the popcorn?!

In the meantime, I'm really looking forward to watching LOTM tomorrow night! My husband has other plans for the evening & he won't be around, so I'll be all alone with DDL [sigh!]!

Wow....what a bunch of good flicks....even ones like South Pacific, The Godfather, The Way We Were made it into some of the lists. Zulu has to be a favorite of the reenactor culture, and Dances With Wolves and Jeremiah Johnson has the "rendezvous" culture that follows them....(you people out there understand "rendezvous culture"??...like the Eastern, etc....most of us reenactors started out that way).... Ahhh, Lonesome Dove....there are parts of that flick that do nothing for me....BUT, there is almost no movie that shows the comradeship between two friends like Dove does....between the Duvall character and the T.L. Jones character. It brings tears to my usually nonemotional eyes. Braveheart and Rob Roy got me into kilts (Sjt. MacWm).....The Patriot is laughable and most reenactors have no time for it!! But, LOTM....!! Well, as reenactors we usually pick at it here and there....but it will stand the test of time. Except for the few small mistakes (like bear fur grenadier caps on the 60th!! and the jury is still out on "silk" patching!!), LOTM will still DO it for us everytime. The combination of long hunter (Many Flags) and British military (Sjt.. Malcolm MacWilliam) sure makes it close to perfect for some of us. That's "our" two shillings for what it's worth......Pax Aye! Flags and Malcolm

OK, Let see!....

Braveheart and Rob Roy...for the Scot in me!

Dancing at Lunasa...for Scots-Irish in me!

Steel Magnolias and Terms of Endearment/Evening star...for the sentimental girl in me that wants to sit on the sofa on a rainy Saturday and cry all afternoon (don't need any Prozac or anything...doesn't happen THAT often)

A River Runs Through It...for the fisherwoman in me!

Pride and Prejudice - the BBC version...because its BBC TV at it best (for what little I know about THAT)

Dances with Wolves, Gone with the Wind, Gettysburg ...for my love of things not of this time.

Oh Yeah!...and LOTM...for my love of history, my love of great movie-making, my love of the NC mountains, my love of great music, and...OK, OK...my love of great-looking guys that can act the pants off of most other great-looking guys!!!

I'm sure, with a list in front of me, I could name lots more!

Arghhhh....how could we forget Gettysburg!!! Gawd.....must be the Alzheimers!! Aye, it's up there with LOTM...and again, the comradeship between Hancock and Armisted.....ahh, it rivals and might surpass Lonesome Dove....although you never see Armisted and Hancock together like you do TL JOnes and Duvall.....But, GETTYSBURG....it is one of the finest ever!!! Ellie,
You must be a saint to limit yourself to three movies. Within a minute I had almost 20 films written down! Three years ago I purchased a DVD player and whereas I usually never bought VHS tapes, I now compulsively buy DVD movies. At this point, my sister-in-laws call me to borrow movies for vacation trips.

My recommendations are movies most people haven't seen but I think everyone should because either they make you laugh or pause for thought. Red Violin, a powerful movie too complicated to explain with the exception of following the life of a 16th century Italian violin; The Dish, a funny somewhat true story that revolves around the Apollo 11 mission; A Family Thing, written by Billy Bob Thornton and features Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones; Defending Your Life, Albert Brook's humorous look at the afterlife; Immortal Beloved, the Amadeus version of Beethoven's life; Coupe DeVille, three brothers who have to deliver a car to Miami; The 10th Kingdom, 7 hour Hallmark miniseries but a must-see for anyone who loves fairytales; and last The Great Race, a Jack Lemmon classic.

I know I could go on and on (too late ) but then I'd either have to shrink the type or post daily updates to fit in all the movies I love to watch and never seem to get sick of.

EM, that's one of my all-time favorite movie lines. But there's so many in that movie - "Give me a little sugar, baby!" - "Klaatu...verada...necktie!". My daughter has the special edition DVD and was complaining just the other day that handling the case made her hands smell like rotting human flesh.
