Greetings to fans of Michael Mann's "Last of the Mohicans" from around the Globe!
I hope that this is ok, but I just wanted to place a short mention of my own site, which is dedicated to another Michael Mann classic - "Manhunter" (1986) - also known as "The first Hannibal Lecter movie!"
My site has been live since 1998 and lives here:
http://www.manhunter.net/index.html
The site does not have much/any Last of the Mohicans content on it, but this is set to change as I have some excellent international and English Lobby photographs to scan in soon. In the mean time, mohicanpress.com seems to have all of the bases covered anyway :) - great site!
All fans are welcome to pop by at my site and thanks for reading this message.
Regards from England,

I have to admit that I am a fan of 'Manhunter', and in some ways it was superior to its remake 'Red Dragon'. First off, William Petersen makes a far more convincing Will Graham, and any movie with Dennis Farina has got to be good (Maybe it is a little of the "blue line" showing, since Dennis was a real Chicago cop before going into acting). I've been a fan of those two guys since 'To Live and Die in L.A.' and the T.V. show 'Crime Story' ("In Chicago, 1962, before you had the right to remain silent, you had Lt. Frank Turillo" Too cool!)
Back to 'Manhunter'; the first time I seen it was as a VHS rental in 1993, right after I entered civilian law enforcement. I liked the movie so much, that I bought a copy and a cassette of the soundtrack (Which I wore out playing, along with my 'Miami Vice' soundtrack and 'Bad Boys' cassingle (From the T.V. show, 'Cops'), in my Z-28... I know, I know, how cliche for a 25 year-old single cop to zip around town in a fast car, but to borrow a line from Mr. Cagle... "Chicks dig it!") I also bought a Charter Arms .44 Spl. Bulldog-Pug revolver (The weapon that the character, Will Graham, carried), which I carried as a back-up piece to my 'cocked and locked' Colt .45 automatic, during that time when I was doing alot of undercover/plainclothes assignments. Yeah, the early 90's, what a wild time...

Great stuff! Sounds like you really got into the "vibe" and style that Mann managed to put across so expertly in Manhunter. Some people say that the years haven't been kind of it, but for me Manhunter remains a "visual" film and a classic at that - much like Last of the Mohicans of course (despite the key difference of Mohicans being a genuine "period piece".

This sparked my interest because last weekend, I caught the last three-quarters of "Manhunter" on AMC. It was my first time seeing it, and I was pretty anxious to see it to compare with "Red Dragon" (I didn't know if "RD" had been a spot-on remake, a "loose adaptation", or what). I was pretty impressed and agree with Sgt. Munro that in some ways "Manhunter" was better, especially the Will Graham character (never really liked that Edward Norton kid). If I hadn't known Michael Mann was involved with this and "Miami Vice", I think I'd have figured it out during the course of the film -- I half-expected the Miami Vice squad to pop in somewhere!
One thing I have to respectfully dissent on is the premise that the movie's music added to its quality... I like a number of songs of admittedly low quality from nostalgaic periods in my life, but bad Iron Butterfly? I kept wondering if whoever had final say on the soundtrack had at one point been attacked by Ray Charles, or founded Ihatemusic.com I'm curious about the first quarter of the movie, but the thought of cringing through that stereophonic metal blast again prompted me to remove "Manhunter" from my Netflix list. Whew!
That small pet peeve aside, I did enjoy it ... I don't think "Red Dragon" would have been what it was without that film setting the bar high in the first place. |

At the end of the day, I think Mann's genius regarding the use of the Iron Butterfly track is that we have a clear camera shot of the character (Dollarhyde) actually putting on the track on his music system.
It's around that point that it becomes obvious that he really IS nuts! lol. |

Well, maybe not the 'Miami Vice' regular cast; Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang and Bill Smitrovich all had played guest roles on 'Miami Vice', as well as playing the main characters in Mann's other T.V. venture, 'Crime Story'. Michael Mann has a habit of sticking with those he has worked with, which is why I am hoping that he picks Studi to play Olmos' old character.

That's a brilliant suggestion - and makes so much sense. Let's hope Michael (or his usual casting agent - Bonnie Timmerman) reads this and takes note! - John |
