Poll Question:
We've all voted many times for the movies we like. Now I'm asking you to vote for the WORST pieces of flotsam ever applied to film. Which of the following critical or box office bombs do you consider the worst and why? Or if you actually liked one of these things, tell us why. And if you think ANOTHER Godawful film should be mentioned and isn't on the list, tell us about that one instead.

I picked "Battlefield Earth" because, even though I've never seen the thing all the way through, I saw enough to realize it's truly one of the worst sci-fi disasters ever made. John Travolta (!!!!) playing a space alien in horrible makeup that makes him look like a Klingon with a water retention problem acting out a horrible story by L. Ron Hubbard. That's about all you need to know about it...
My other "worsts" aren't on the list, but they include (and I know this is probably not popular) anything involving Leonardo Dicaprio and Julia Roberts. I'm the horrible insensitive one who, like a dear friend of mine here in town, couldn't wait for the end of "Titanic" so Leo could go sleep with the fishes. And I don't know if anybody remembers "Out of Africa," which I really tried to like, but it seemed like it took six and a half hours to get anybody out of Africa, and by the end I just really wished the lions had made a Happy Meal out of the cast by the second hour.

I'm with you, Christina ... I was wondering whether to go there and name "Pretty Woman", but since you've paved the way I won't waver
Also, I'll mention Denzel Washington's "Training Day". It may have gotten better after the first horrible thirty minutes -- it's hard to imagine it possibly could have gotten any worse -- but I didn't stick around to find out. |

"Against All Odds" was my personal UNfavorite. I yawned through about half of it and then left. Fortunately, I haven't seen any of the movies listed here. |

Moulin Rouge. What was Baz Luhrmann thinking with that camera action. Made me seasick.
Alexander came in a close second. Interminable bad history lesson.
Plan 9 from Outer Space...at least it was funny! (God Bless Ed Wood!) |

Eversmile, NJ was the worst I ever saw, and it starred Daniel Day-Lewis whom I adore. I sat through it once and hated it. I rented it a couple of more times to see if I could stomach it, but could never make it through. Chris |

I've seen so many godawful movies through all the years that it's impossible to say which I consider to be the worst. There are all those beach movies, teen idol movies, etc. I guess I liked them at the time, but I was young and brain-dead back then.
Of those listed, I saw only parts of Heavens Gate. Don't remember much about it.
There WAS one foreign film from the '70s that comes to mind, called "The Mole", or whatever that word is in Spanish. It was hideous in many ways, and I never did figure out what the point was. I guess I would call it an early Indy film, which isn't what makes it bad, it just fits that genre in that it was NOT something the average American would be exposed to (I saw it on campus at the U of IL). I usually enjoy Indy films. But The Mole was just UCKY! Anybody out there heard of it? ( I remember an hallucinogenic beetle the size of a bratwurst)

I think "Night of the Living Dead" just about tops it. I actually bought the VHS! I never made it past about half way through. I know it's supposed to be a cult classic and all that, but I guess I am just not part of a cult (other than the Mohican one). I love "Rocky Horror", but "Night of the Living Dead" really uh.... stinks. |

There are so many bad movies that I have seen, but I haven't seen any of the ones that are listed. Let's see, I had to torture myself with watching "The Cat in the Hat" with my grandson. Even he fell asleep half way through the movie!!! "Speed 2" was pretty bad and even though Wes Studi is a great actor, "The Killing Jar" was one of the most boring movies that I have ever seen!!! I have to admit, I do love Julia Roberts. Yes, even "Pretty Woman." Oh well, we can't all have the same tastes in movies, can we? Except for "LOTM" of course!!!

Actually, Rich, I liked most of "Titanic" except for the fact that it had Leo in it...had there been a different actor in the role, it would probably be one of my favorites. He's just one of those celebs I can't deal with, period...
I'm interested to hear yet another pan of "Cat in the Hat" too. From what I can tell that must have been one of the worst of all time. I haven't read or heard one good thing about it... |

Christina, I really like Mike Meyers, and that was the main reason that I rented the movie, besides the fact that my grandson saw it and just had to watch "The Cat in the Hat." He loves the books, so I thought that it would be a great movie to rent. Boy, was I wrong!!! It was actually geared for teenagers and adults instead of children. It had some very "adult" jokes in it, none of which my grandson caught on to, but I did. I was so glad when my grandson fell asleep and I turned the piece of trash off. If you haven't seen this movie, then please don't waste your time!!!

In my opinion, the only thing wrong with "Titanic" was the soundtrack. Leo wasn't nearly as annoying as Celene Dion yeeeccchhhhhh!!!!!!!! Maybe we need to do a poll about the worst movie soundtrack next? Stephanie |

Excuse my stupidity for posting without writing what I wanted to write... In my list of The Worst Ever I inadvertently forgot "The Postman" as an option. Does anybody remember this less than stellar Kevin Costner vehicle? He plays a mailman in a post-apocalyptic world. This one came out either right before or right after "Waterworld," which if you will recall features Kevin with gills... not a good series of work for ole K.C... |

I like to think of the movies on your list as "bad movies that are painful to watch", which is why I haven't seen any of them in their entirety. I've seen bits of "Battlefield Earth" and portions of various "Chucky"/Leprechauns" selections. To me, there is a second breed of bad movie- "bad movies that are so ridiculous/pitiful that they become entertaining." This is the stuff that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" used to cut to shreds. Several movies in my own collection that fall into this category are: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai-lotta good actors, just didn't fly Cabin Boy-Chris Elliot comedy Dark Star-low budget sci-fi, college project gone big The Evil Dead-low budget horror/slasher Flash Gordon-big, brightly colored cheese with sweet Queen soundtrack any Gamera film-flying japanese turtle that is the friend of all children any Godzilla film-or Rodan, love guys in big rubber monster suits stepping on models King Solomon's Mines-80's version-Sharon Stone, Richard Chamberlain Krull-cross between Star Wars/Dune/Conan/Dragonslayer-elaborate but poorly done Ladyhawke-Michelle Pfeiffer/Rutger Hauer/Matthew Broderick-reeeally bad synth soundtrack The Omega Man-Charlton Heston as last man on earth-lots of: fast cars, guns, evil albino zombies with afros and shades Phantasm-tall undertaker with flying metal spheres at his command drives around in hearse Plan 9 From Outer Space-aforementioned Ed Wood film features last appearance of brilliant Romanian-American actor/junkie Bela Lugosi Red Sonja-Brigitte Nielsen and Schwarzenegger doing the Dungeons and Dragons thing

Doc M has notoriously low standards, and is known to be able to sit through just about anything. Like Sus said, there are those uniquely horrible, hugely enjoyable movies, and there are those that you know are to be avoided at all costs ...I mean, come on. Leprechaun II??? And then there are the big, dumb, incredibly expensive movies with big-name actors that are supposed to be taken seriously --- and THOSE are the ones that p*** me off no end. These are strictly my opinion, and I know they have been enjoyed by some...like YOU, Rich!! *LOL* But here are some of the ones I've paid my local Blockbuster good money to rent, and ended up throwing things at the tv and screaming.
King Arthur: How bad could it be? Great cast, love all the King Arthur stuff -- even the TV movie version of The Mists of Avalon, which was pretty bad. This was just totally mindless, illogical, big dumb loud Jerry Bruckheimer crapola. A huge disappointment.
I had forgotten about The Postman -- I normally watch all movies to the bitter end, even the ones I hate. This I ejected after 20 minutes, and only the thought that I would have to pay for it kept me from jumping up and down on it. Even the cat wouldn't pee on it. This was from a great David Brin sci fi book too, which made it even more of an atrocity.
Armageddon -- why I thought I might enjoy a movie featuring two actors I absolutely loathe -- I Smirk Therefore I Am Bruce Willis, and Ben A**flap -- I can't imagine. And add to this Liv Tyler as the love interest, who maintains on her face at all times the vacuous expression of the brain-damaged, and you have a real viewing treat in store. I watched this for about a half-hour and then fast-forwarded it through to then end only because I was hoping everybody would die. Alas, only Bruce succomebed.
The Hulk -- another huge big green disppointment. Give me the old clunky TV series anytime.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- This one broke my previous Postman record, and was ejected after a mere 15 minutes. Life is too short.
Pearl Harbor -- as you know, I love WWII movies...plus I cheerfully anticipated my beloved Ben getting blown up early on. I knew I was in big trouble when I was watching this mess for what seemed like 10 hours and we hadn't even gotten to Sunday yet. And Ben survived. The horror! The horror!
There are many more, but nature is merciful and has erased a lot of them from my memory.
Doc M

I just had the pleasure of witnessing THE HULK this past weekend. That has to be one of the WORST movies I have ever seen. I was embarrassed for the actors! I actually liked Armageddon AND the Postman AND Pearl Harbor (cowering - getting ready for the Whack Whack Whacks).
Sus, I also have the best time watching Mystery Science Theater 3000. We OWN This Island Earth. It is SOOOOOOO Bad and those guys crack me up - you can always count on great laughs with those clever little silhouette heads!
I haven't had the pleasure of Battlefield Earth, but the movies I MOST detest are the teeny booper ski, get drunk, ski in your underware, drink more, ski into buildings and statues and get REAL hurt and ENJOY it because you drank some more....movies! Makes me wanna do BAD things to people watching those!

Why Gadge, aren't you the lucky one!! You too have won an all-expenses paid week-end to the Mohicanland Clinic For The Terminally Weird, where you can sit in the lanyard-weaving room with both Mr. Federici and Wilderness Woman to watch Titanic and Pearl Harbor! Normally I would include a few *whack! whack! whacks!* as well, but that would border on cruel and unusual punishment. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
And BTW, just what do you have aaginst getting drunk and skiing in your undies?? What are you, a commie???

Doc M, Sorry to hear that Mists of Avalon (tv movie) was no good. I'm reading the book right now and thought Anjelica Huston was a perfect pick for Viviane and I was looking forward to (if i can find it) renting a copy. Oh well! Have you read the book? I think Christina Ricci would have been perfect to play Morgaine. But I have to agree about King Arthur... yeecchhh! I was disappointed. I adore the actress.... Keira Knightley I think is her name... loved her in Pirates of the Caribbean but the whole King Arthur thing was a let down. And speaking of the 80's... I recently watched Uncle Buck again and laughed just as hard as ever at John Candy. God rest his soul!! Steph |

I know a WORSE movie. It's...
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Just saw this ... ... no way you can compare "Titanic" or "Pearl Harbor" or many of those mentioned in this thread to this one ... I mean, it sucks ... badly. Example: features a sexily clad cop named "Valentine"! It's all downhill from there! |
