I voted for the Great Escape on the poll- what a great movie- an amazing cast and chemistry between the cast, great music, great quotes it's just GREAT! I also love, Das Boot (although I had to watch it twice w/ subtitles before it finally sunk in), The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List. A couple not mentioned are Memphis Belle (another great cast in my opinion) and I haven't seen it but am aquainted w/ the man who did marine corp. history consultation for the movie-Windtalkers or Codetalkers? (I think it's about Najavo code talkers in WWII). I would like to see this one-anybody else see it already?

I've seen Windtalkers, Kay. The parts of it that are actually about the Navajo code talkers are very good (as any movie with Adam Beach tends to be, IMHO). Overall it was disappointing, though, as far too much screen time is devoted to the storyline centered on Nicolas Cage's character (movies with him tend not to be too good, IMHO). I'd say it's definitely worth seeing if you're interested in the subject matter. |

I thought "Windtalkers" was a very good movie. Been a few years since I last saw it but definitely worth a watch.
What about "National Treasure" and the sequel Bookworm?. Those had Nic Cage in and they were great movies. |

A Bridge Too Far. This film is to former paratroopers what Sands of Iwo Jima is to former Marines.
Where Eagles Dare is a fun one to watch. It contains some historical inaccuracies and it's a little bit over the top in some regards but it's still a fun movie to watch.
The Longest Day shows some great history. I think this one is a good candidate for a remake.
A noteworty historical tidbit about the piping scenes in The Longest Day. So many pipers were killed in WWI that the British War Office banned the practice of pipers in combat in WWII. But the commander of the British Special Service Brigade was Brigadier Simon Christopher Joseph Fraser, 25th Chief of Clan Frasier and 15th Lord Lovat.
Lord Lovat ignored the War Office order and on D-Day morning 21-year-old piper Bill Millin followed his commander into the water and emerged onto Sword Beach with kilts a-dripping and piping Highland Laddie.
Later, several captured German snipers were asked why they did not target piper Millin. They said they thought he was mad and Bill Millin went down in history as the mad piper of Normandy!
Millin later piped at Lord Lovat's funeral in 1995.

I'll have to disagree with you about The Longest Day. It seems OK, right up until one watches Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, which show how really lame it is... |

I understand where you're coming from. But if Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers had been filmed in the '60s they wouldn't be as graphic and visually impressive as they are.
The Longest Day documents a lot of impressive historical events: the glider and parachute assaults, troops getting off the beach, etc. Considering when it was made I think it does a good job even if the visual effects aren't what we've grown used to and the dialogue is a little simplistic and innocent at times.
Remember I said I thought it was a good candidate for a remake. |

Longrifle- i agree with your assessment 100%. Obi- I also agree with you that "Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" are superior films. The only thing they lack is the Duke, Henry Fonda and Robert Mitchum. It's true that there was a lot of heavy duty star power in both "Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" but no one says it quite like John Wayne. I've said it before and I'll say it again- "The Story of GI Joe", "Twelve O'Clock High, and "Run Silent, Run Deep" are all amazing WW2 films. |
