I haven't seen too many MS films, but I thought she was absolutely luminous in LOTM. Her performance impresses me more every time I see it, and I think she never looked more beautiful than she did in period costume.
The last film I saw her in was "The General's Daughter". It made me really sad to see such a fabulous actress in such a token female role. Do you think that her best performance ever was in LOTM? Will she ever be that good again?

I watched MS is a movie last night. It was called We Were Soldiers. She was pretty good in that. It starred Mel Gibson.

Without a doubt!

I doubt it very much.
This has always been a disappointing "fact" to me ... she was so good in The Last of the Mohicans, and then ... nothing. She was "ok" or "all right," but never did she just knock your socks off. Two reasons for this, in my humble opinion:
- Poor role choices
- I think she needs the right director to truly make her shine. Michael Mann seems to have been that director. She should work with him again!
I know, I've said all this before - even have a bit in the Musings about this - but, it's so irking! |

MS said in an interview that LOTM was the first film in which she was not required to take of her clothes. Do you think this could be a possible reason why she was so good? After all, it's probably easier to concentrate on giving a good performance when you know that the film crew, and movie audience, aren't ogling your rude bits!:)
Also, I think her pre-LOTM roles were mostly decorative damsels in distress and Cora really gave her something to sink her acting chops into. What do you think?

Sidony, Like you I thought Maddy really did shine in LOTM. I liked her in other movies such as "The General's Daughter" but she had a stand out performance with Mohicans.
To that point, although I love DDL in most of his movies, I recently saw "The Crucible" and felt like he was Nathaniel trying to play a part 100 years in the past. Did you happen to see "Crucible" and if so, what was your impression.

Christie,
I've seen "The Crucible" and thought he did a damn good job at portraying John Proctor....totally different type role from Hawkeye, though. I didn't particularly care for the haircut and rotted teeth. Poor John, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.

Hi, Christie,
I'm in agreement with Theresa on this one: quote: I've seen "The Crucible" and thought he did a damn good job at portraying John Proctor....totally different type role from Hawkeye, though. I didn't particularly care for the haircut and rotted teeth. Poor John, he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.

I believe this movie was touched on previously, in another series of posts elsewhere on this Board, and I seem to recall someone mentioning that they had been very annoyed by Winona Ryder in this film. I felt the same way!
What I want to do now is try to rent and/or purchase videos of DDL's earlier films (you can't find a lot of them on DVD) and explore the other roles he's had. And of course, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of "Gangs of New York!"

Christie, I'm a die hard DDL fan, and have been since LOTM, but I was disappointed with his performance in "Crucible". It wasn't terrible, exactly, but it just didn't engage me the way his other performances did. Actually, I can't remember much of his performance, which in itself is a very strange and worrying sign!
I had really looked forward to seeing "The Crucible" since it had been a while since DDL's previous film, but I was left with a feelling of anticlimax. DDL's performance aside, the fillm had the look and feel of a made for TV movie.
