Is there anybody here from Greensboro N.C.? I am in another group of friends and we are planning a little get-together, and I was just wondering what points of interest there might be around Greensboro.
Of course that means that I will probably miss the N.Y. trip, which I will really hate to do!!! Maybe if I scrimp and save, I can go on both trips!!!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Love,
Kay

Guilford Courthouse National Battlefield ... scene of a major Southern theater Revolutionary War battle. Great place! If you go in March - around the 15th, I think, there's usually a spectacular reenactment of the events nearby.

Right. There is a big reenactment in March. It is NOT on NPS land, so a decent battle can be fought. There is a museum and bookstore there and a movie to go along with it.

Also, there is Old Salem Village: http://www.oldsalem.org/

And Bethabara: http://www.bethabarapark.org/

(love that picture!)

Also, Fort Dobbs at Statesville on I-40: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/hs/dobbs/dobbs.htm

And continuing west on I-40 is Lake James, but not much to see there unless you have Eric Hurley along.

That is an awesome photo of the church at Bethabara, and a very interesting website too. Although I knew there were Moravian settlements in NC, I had never heard of Bethabara. When I was putting together a Pennsylvania basket for the Gathering, I paid close attention to where things were made, to make sure no out-of-state products snuck in. Finding myself in the MOravian Bookshop in the historic district of Bethlehem, PA, I was sure I'd find lots of goodies for the basket. I did find one or two things, but most of the items I looked at had been made in North Carolina!

Thanks Rich and Fitz,
We won't be going until next July, so I guess the battle is out, but we might try to go to Bethabara Park and Old Salem. I will run it by the other girls and see what they think. Thanks again!!!

Love,
Kay

Kaylynn,

I also recommend Old Salem Village. It's much like Williamsburg in its ability to take you "back", but much smaller, and more easily handled in a day's visit. The Rev War group I was with traveled there for a reenactment of the continental troops entering the village to acquire (take) stores during the revolution. What a fun event!

I would Highly recommend the restaurant housed in the original tavern. Not only is the Food amazing, the Presentation is wonderful, and I can't say enough about the Atmosphere. Also, the Bakery at the other end of that street is not to be missed. Fresh baked goods daily, sometimes right out of the oven, period-dressed bakers and superior quality. I believe they include those paper-thin Moravian cookies, especially the spicy ones.

But do be careful, because while the village is still in its Original location, it is Now in the middle of a very rough part of Winston-Salem. Security is pretty tight during the visiting hours, so don't be afraid to go, but lock everything up, perhaps even in the trunk.

We won't be going until next July, so I guess the battle is out

If you want to go a little out of the way, there is a good event at Historic Brattonsville: http://www.yorkcounty.org/brattonsville/index.html

Joe Hinson (known on this board as Hawkeye_Joe) is usually prominently involved.

It's always held just after the 4th of July (the site calender has not been updated at this time) and the site itself is just south of Charlotte, NC. Brattonsville was used in a lot of the filming of The Patriot.

Thanks for the advice Blue Otter. I will remember it if we make it to Salem!!!
Fitz, I doubt if we will be able to go all the way to Brattonsville. Besides, we won't be there until the end of July. We're not exactly sure of the dates yet. It does look interesting though. Thanks for all of the info!!!

Love,
Kay
