Out of all the main characters in LOTM, which one of them has had the toughest, hardest life? In other words, who has been through the most in their lives? In my opinion, it's definitely Cora and Alice. I mean, they are basically in the middle of a war, going through many things that women back then didn't have to go through. They also are being chased by Magua who wants to kill them..which is pretty scary. Also, their father dies, and they were very close to him it seemed like. Alice, has to stand their and watch the man that loved her, Uncas, get killed trying to save her... and there's probably still more that they go through that I can't even remember. I think they definitely have had the hardest life. What do you all think?

Hi UL13,
good question ! If you take the two female's lives before they went mad and went over to America in search of 'an adventure' as Alice puts it, the ladies have had much more of an easy life than Uncas, Hawkeye and Ching. In those days it was great to have money as you could have everything done for you and could while away your time simply by attending court or afternoon teas. So before theie involvement in the war the ladies will have had it pretty easy - which is why I think it came as such a shock to Cora to see how 'the other half lived'. So from that point of view I would say that Hawkeye, Uncas and Ching will have had a harder life - although if living in the wilderness is something that you are used to then it would come as second nature and if you were to reverse the roles and have Uncas dressed in an English suit - he would have found it really hard how cute would he look though!
Think I'm going of track again (swoon)! I understand what you mean by the question though - Alice and Cora do have a terrible time of it once they get to America; the things that happen to them and the things they see ought not to have happened to them. But as you know poor Alice doesn't cope at all well and Cora takes things a lot better - but I think a lot of that was to do with the age gap.
Hope this makes sense!
How did your assignment go?

Well, in my humble opinion, that "honor" should go to Chingachgook.
Throughout out his life, he has had to observe the diminishment of his way of life, and of his family and tribe. He has had to watch the lands of his people be taken over by others. He has had to fight people from other tribes, his own people. He has had to struggle to survive.
But most importantly, he has had to watch his blood son die. There can be nothing worse than losing a child. Especially when the loss of that child makes him... "The Last of the Mohicans." |

My vote goes to the Camerons who before "hacking" their way through the wilderness, burying their children along the way way, lived as indentured servants for seven years. Only to be murdered after finally working for something of their own, not beholding to anyone. |
What you give of yourself is priceless. |

Well, first, sorry for my -bad- english, I'll do my best!
I agree with Wilderness Woman. Chingachgook has seen his son die. He's the last of his people, he knows that when he die, mohicans will die forever. The feeling of solitude must be shocking. |

I would have to go with Magua...His life was consumed with seeking vengeance against Col. Monroe, and everything English... I can't say as I blame him. I would undoubtly do the same if someone, or some group was resposible for the loss of my loved ones. Though I don't agree with him making war on women and children, but that was the times he lived in. |
