Poll Question:
If we were to do SOTR, how do you feel about these options?

Choices:

I would pay a higher ticket price (between $30 and $50) to get up close and personal with a name per
Don't care who you book, as long as the ticket price is under $20.00.
Spirits concert just not my thing; I'll skip no matter who performs.

I voted for the "under $20 option," not because I wouldn't shell out a larger amount of money, but because getting "name" performers seems to result in an awful lot of anxiety for the persons in charge of the Gathering, since then it becomes important to sign up lots of Gatherers and have them pay up, and so forth.

Actually, we never have any problems...at least to date...with selling tickets to the events with name performers. There is such a large audiuence for Native American music in Asheville our concerts at SOTR always sell out. The dilemma is this: SOTR is a small venue, seating only 80 people (and then, they are packed in like sardines in a can!). The whole purpose of doing the concerts is so that the Gatherers may take advantage of seeing and hearing quality performers in a unique, personal venue. If the Gatherers do not attend, we still have a successful concert, because I can sell every ticket that Gatherers don't buy...but what is the point? If the Spirits concert is not an event the Gatherers want to do, then it is not worth the effort by the organizers to put it together. The poll was put together to help determine just what level of interest the Gatherers have in an event of this nature. So please, we need your input!

I think any event that approaches $50 may result in some folks not choosing that event - hence the "ala carte" gathering this year. HOWEVER - even though I was not able to attend this year due to a conflict - I think this is a great event and would pay $50ish dollars, speaking for myself. I think if you consider an approximate meal price of $15 or so dollars and then the concert fee - I don't think we can go wrong with a $30-$35 dollar price (inclucing meal... $50 total). I think if it got more than that, more and more folks would drop out and then - as you said Ann - what would be the point.

My vote is to keep things in the range of $20-$35 dollars fee for a concert and continue the event! *Not an exact poll selection so I didn't pick one*

My two cents...

My two cents...
I had to borrow and scrape just to be able to make it to this year's Gathering, and were it not for the WONDERFUL help of a dear friend when it was most needed, I wouldn't have been there at all. I don't know about everyone else's economic situation, but I know from my point of view I'm not even going to MAJOR concerts these days if the tickets are much above $35. So that's about as high as I would pay to see anybody at a small albeit very cool venue like Spirits. I really don't care about being "Up close and personal" with an artist as long as I can hear some good music and possibly purchase a CD and enjoy the company of friends. I vote for keeping the price LOW as possible, simply because I suspect I'm not the only one out there having to practice severe economic discipline, and I don't see that changing a whole lot in the next year or so...and I would hate to think some people might not be able to enjoy a good musical event because the cost was too exorbitant. I know I'm not signing up to attend Mohican Gatherings in order to have an out of this world concert experience...if somebody wants an expensive concert experience I think they can get it outside the Gathering.
Just my two or three cents, take it or leave it...

I'm for keeping the cost down, too. The dinners at SOTR have been a great boost to the Ariel fundraising since it gives us an outside group for selling raffle tickets - so of course I'm all for having the dinner. But with so many other expenses, I also think we need to keep the cost within reach of most Gatherers.

I too am one of the folks who feel that the costs should be kept down. A LOT of people have told me they didn't attend the Gathering because they simply couldn't find the funds to cover everything...

I think Christina put it well... Anyone who wants to attend a big concert can do it whenever they feel they can afford it. But... Gatherings are relatively small groups with limited funds which, with SOTR, paying to get an LOTM character to attend a Gathering, and get a musical group at the Games, those funds have to go a loooong way. And unfortunately, it (the Gathering) becomes priced right out of MohicanBoard posters' pockets.

Rich was surprised that the numbers of Gatherers had dropped and that folks 'picked and chose' what they would attend. A lot of Gatherers who DID make it, dropped out of expensive things like Biltmore, if they had done it before, to keep their costs down. From talking to others, my take on it is, 'costs' were a primary factor in choosing whether they attended the Gathering or not - and what activities they participated in.

I have to go with those that vote for keeping costs down, to help make it easier for folks to attend a Gathering. Otherwise, what's the point of a GATHERING...
