You are correct: Cook Forest will not take place this year. However, there is another event that is being put on to replace it. It is called Custaloga Town, and it will take place at the Custaloga Town Boy Scout Reservation (near Carlton, PA) on June 17 & 18. It promises to be a very good one, from what I have been reading.

I enjoyed reading this thread again. It is really amazing to me how much can happen in the space of two years. In 2004, I was hungry to hear about the event, and was dreaming and wishing I could have been there. This year, I will be. And I cannot wait.

Dear pasmokepole,
The event in question has not been cancelled, only relocated to the Custaloga BSA Camp (Carlton, PA). It is still the same weekend (Father's Day... appropriately enough), and most of the same units will be there; Graham's Coy. of the 42nd RHR has been doing that event from its beginning in 2002, and we'll be there this year as well... Huzzah!!!
If you check the Yahoo F&I Board, you will find out more information on it, or you could call the French Creek Council of the BSA for more information as well at 1-800-851-2392. I hope this helps, and if you do happen to attend, stop by the 42nd's company street to say "Hi" to a couple of people from this board (Myself, 42ndNCO, Highlander & Pte.MacGregor).

The event at Cook Forest is no more. It had been a premier event for 4 years, and then a new park manager/director was transferred in, the Commonwealth, in its infinite wisdom, decided to modernize and recondition some of the areas we needed for the event.....during the time frame of when we would normally be there......and, therefore, render the site unusable. There was a VERY GOOD alternative site (actually a better site than the original) at the park, but the boss-lady refused it, insisted on reducing the numbers of reenactors from about 375 to 100, and making other unreasonable demands, conditions, etc., and has killed the proverbial Goose That Laid the Golden Egg. She has managed to really tick off the local merchants, who will now not see the estimated 10,000 visitors this event brought into the park.
However, there will be an event at the Boy Scout Camp, Custaloga Town, near Carlton, PA, and right on French Creek, on the weekend of June 17-18, 2006, and as of today, over 320 reenactors and 27 quality sutlers are registered. A panel of scholars headed by Dr. David Nixon, of Slippery Rock University will be presenting several seminars on the F&I War, also:
"Perspectives on the French and Indian War"
This panel will consist of the following participants and topics:
Dr. Daniel P. Barr, Asst. Prof., Robert Morris University. Dr. Barr is the author of "Unconquered: The Iroquois League at War in Colonial America," and "The Boundaries Between Us: Natives and Newcomers in the Old Northwest." Dr. Barr will speak on the 1756 Kittanning Raid.
Dr. David Dixon, Prof., Slippery Rock University. Dr. Dixon is the author of "Never Come to Peace Again:' Pontiac's Uprising and the Fate of the British Empire in North America," "Bushy Run Battlefield," and "Fort Pitt
Museum." Dr. Dixon will discuss Pontiac's Uprising in Western Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kevin Kopper, Instructor, Kent State University. Dr. Kopper is the editor of the "The Journals of George Washington and Christopher Gist: Mission to Fort Le Boeuf, 1753-1754." Dr. Kopper will address Washington's 1753 mission to French forts.
The site is much better suited to what we do than Cook Forest, is more reenactor-friendly than Cook Forest turned into (the Boy Scouts are very happy to have the event there; they even have established a Venture Crew to help coordinate it), and is located on an historic site: the home and burial place of Guyasutha, a chief of the Delaware Indians had his town here known as Custaloga. He was buried here about 1810.

Aye Lass, it will be nice to meet face-to-face. Seamus and I always make it a point to share a wee bit of Port, at the end of the duty day, and I do believe that it is my turn to buy (I found a really nice period brand). Would you do me the honor of having a drink with us? I believe that Ourry's Coy. of the 60th RAR is going there as well (Jeff Graham's group), so perhaps we may have blueotter join us as well, for another 'mini-gathering' (Like we had last year at OBV). This is shaping up to be another fun event...

I've just this day returned from the Custaloga Town French & Indian War Encampment in the wilderness of Western Pennsylvania.
I have looked forward to, with much anticipation, my first weekend event in which I camped (sleeping in my own newly-purchased tent) as a member of the 3rd Battalion Pennsylvania (The Augusta Regiment). I am here to say that despite the 6-1/2 hour (one way) drive, the sticky-hot weather, and the armies of ticks that had to be fended off...... it was everything my imaginings could possibly have been and much more.
The bait has been taken; the hook has been set; I'm a goner. There is no turning back... |

Aye, it was a bonny-fun weekend indeed!!! A special thanks goes to Seamus, who as LTC Burd of the Augusta Regiment, served as Crown Forces Commander. Both the woods tactical and the field demonstration went off without any problems; which should be of no suprise to anyone who has taken to field with Seamus before. He also did a fantastic job, along with Jim Brown, with the organization and logistics involved in creating such an event. Huzzah, to the both of them!!!
It was also this old soldiers' most honorable pleasure, to finally meet Wilderness Woman in person. Lass, you are as lovely in person, as you have always been here in cyberspace.
And even though UncasLover_13 and Young Native could not be there to share in the fun, we still had blueotter and Highlander to help round-out our bonny circle of camraderie!!! Thank you to all, and I shall look forward to our next campaign...

Ah, Wilderness Woman, It was most pleasurable meeting you in person. I haven't been on the Message Board much this season (finishing up with school and graduating), so I didn't know you were going to be at Custloga. It was fun doing "crowd control" with you, especially when the Highlanders were kneeling in our direction....!
Somehow I missed the glass of port... next time come get me!!! 
I couldn't make Niagara because I was so sick...! 
I will be at Old Bedford Village this coming weekend... and then Fort Ontario, Meigs, Old Stone House, Fort Henry, the Kitanning Crossing and Fort Ligonier. My BIG EVENT of the year will be the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown. I'll be camping with the First Maryland, as I have decided to join their ranks.
And last but not least, Doc't Tactical on Halloween weekend. I wouldn't miss that for the world! I'll be broke, but I'll be there!

Hi Rose, and welcome back! I enjoyed meeting you and talking with you, as well. It was a fun weekend, wasn't it? We will probably run into each other at Ligonier, and do you mean the Kittanning Expedition 2006? I plan to be there, too. (Not on the march, of course, but at the encampment at the end.) I have to say that I do envy you Yorktown...
