Well, I finally did it -- signed up for a two-week free trial with Netflix. That's the internet company that sends you as many DVDs as you care to watch, three at a time, for $19.95 a month. (You've probably seen one of their pop-up ads.) The staff at the local Blockbuster are very nice, but the store is too small and so is the parking area. I cringe at the thought of going there on a Friday or Saturday evening, trying to find a parking space, saying "excuse me" about 20 times as I look for the movie I want, of which there are often no copies left. And worst of all is looking for a DVD I want --most recently, Skinwalkers, The Crossing, and Zulu -- and finding they've never added it to their stock. (I don't watch TV, so I'm often looking for made-for-TV movies and PBS series once they've come out on DVD.) So, I'm giving Netflix a try, and the three DVDs just named are the first three I'll receive. If anyone else has tried Netflix, I'd love to hear how it's working out for you.

Mary, when LOTM first came out on DVD, I purchased a DVD-player & it came with a free Netflix trial. Very convenient, great selection, generous terms - I thought it beat the local video store hands down!! |

I have been subscribed to netflix for over a year and couldn't be more satisfied with it! I tried the two week trial thing and was really impressed. I was tired of driving to blockbuster and like you, most of the time the movies i went there for weren't there anyways. and with four young children and i can make a list of over 100 movies that i want to watch, and after you send in one then they the next one on your list. everything after that was pretty automatic. i love it! and customer service was very friendly when one of the movies had gotten lost in the mail. one time i couldn't find a movie that i had misplaced, after two weeks i finally found it. can you imagine the late fees from blockbuster? let us know what you think of it! |

Well, I'm pretty impressed, so far. I joined up last Sunday, received two movies on Tuesday, and the third on Thursday. It probably helps that there's apparently a warehouse in Harrisburg; that's where the movies are returned to. Of course, much credit is certainly due to the very competent and dedicated employees of the U.S. Postal Service! I've watched and returned the first two movies (Zulu and Skinwalkers, both excellent) and will watch the third tonight. An amazing selection to choose from -- for instance, I found the film versions of the Richard Sharpe novels that my husband likes, starring Sean Bean. The only downside that I foresee is that this could seriously cut into my reading time.... |
