FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This message went to all principals of every K-12 in Delaware. It will filter to all teachers of History and Social Studies. Part of the mission of AST is to give students the opportunity to interact with Living Historians. Bussed students will NOT be charged. Friday, 7 May will be proclaimed in the state by Lt. Gov. John Carney as "American Soldier Timeline Day".
Greer Firestone, Pres.
The Fort DuPont Society

Lewis Huffman, Education Associate for Social Studies at Dept Of Ed and I have been working with event planners for a spectacular presentation to be held on May 7-9 on the grounds of Fort DuPont State Park in Delaware City, Delaware.

The American Soldier Timeline (AST) is a "Living History" event which will bring together, for the first time, more than 700 re-enactors.

The emphasis of this Living History event is a) interaction with students and re-enactors portraying soldiers and family members of specific eras and b) demonstrations that students and adults can experience, for example; a Revolutionary War campsite, a Civil War surgery, or simply hunkering down behind sand bags of a WWII machine gun unit.

In addition to the re-enactors, tanks, jeeps, troop carriers, cavalry horses, canine demonstrations, drill units, field hospitals and period encampments will help to enhance the presentations. A World War I trench will be constructed, so students can walk through and experience life during trench warfare. During the day, students will be able to eat and talk with military personalities including re-enactor Generals Robert E. Lee and George Meade. Also, Forrest Guth, an original "Band of Brothers" member and Chip Reid, NBC correspondent during the Iraq War will be present to talk with students and staff.

There is ample parking on the grounds of Fort DuPont; it is suggested, however, that schools arrive by bus. Although there will be some food vendors on site, it is recommended that students bring their own lunch.

I urge you to visit AST's website and visit 'Participating Units' and 'Daily Events'. This event not only spans the history of the American Soldier, but of America itself.

For further information, you can visit the AST website at:

This looks and sounds like a most interesting and educational event to attend. Nice website, too.
