On Friday, February 13, 2004, the Mohican Board - and the entire Mohican Press Web Site, for that matter - will be temporarily shut down.
This is for server maintenance & will include a complete overhaul. According to our web host, this will result in extensive bandwidth allowances and greatly increased speeds - even for us dial-up users. You may have noticed, particularly in the last 10 days, or so, a dramatic decrease in performance, especially in peak hours. A sudden & unexpected funneling of bandwidth by an upstream router was the culprit. This will fix that, and then some.
You can expect the Site to be inaccessible from somewhere between 2-3 PM through 9-10 PM [EST] on that date. [Give or take a few hours!] That's this Friday - 2 days hence from this post. Exactly how long it'll be down will depend on any problems encountered - I would expect no longer than a few hours, but ...
We'll see how it look come Saturday morn!

Er, ok Rich, I'll try to hang in there while the board is offline! I'll be breaking out in a cold sweat and having uncontrollable shakes from withdrawal, but I will make it!!! Just hurry! |

<<<Ulp>>> Yes, Carter, it's not going to be easy, is it?
I am already steeling my nerves in preparation for having to do without! Egads... no taking a quick peek during work hours and just before I shut down to go home (shhhhh... don't tell my boss!), no running to the computer at home between dinnertime and watching "Joan of Arcadia." Aack! Whatever shall I do?
However! The end result should be so-o-o-o-o-o worth it! |

Well Rich, it's like this. I will remember it each time I come to the board and I see the reminder, but by tomorrow, I will have forgotten, and then I will be blaming my stupid computer for not letting me get into the site. It's going to be worth having it down for a day if it makes it load a little faster. Sometimes I can sit here and drink a cup of coffee before I can even get to the message board. Here's to a faster site.

DONE! Seems the server was down from about 2:30-6:00PM [EST] yesterday.
Though it is quite clearly not running at "10 times faster," as my web host claimed it would, it does seem to be moving along quite nicely, so far. Of course, I'm on a dial-up connection, so it never moves that fast. Time will tell - Monday afternoon, if it's still not sluggish then, I'd venture to call it a moderate success.
Curious as to your experiences [mention your connection mode, too!] ... |

Excellent job, Sachem. Even on my antiquated PC, with dial-up modem, I've notice my loading time has been cut in half. Looks good, runs good!

So far, it is much better! I have RoadRunner cable service both at home and at work. However, my home computer (4 years old) is traditionally slower than my work computer, which has more RAM.
At this point, it's working very well! |

Rich,
Things are much quicker than the last time I visited (before the shut-down on the 13th). At least for me, it was a great help. I also have roadrunner service.
Thanks for the efforts! Jayne |
