Poll Question:
As we prepare to revamp the titles & ranks assigned to us - the posters - that are utilized by this board's system, we'd really like your input! Choose one of the following OR reply to this Poll with a newer, fresher, thought! [include 5 Ranks!] Below are some sample "ranks!" Subject to revision upon more thought! So, which "scale" should we use? [PLEASE RE-VOTE IF YOUR TALLY WAS LOST!]

No comment really about the poll, except that this new board format is TOO FUN !!!!
I LOVE the Active Topics button, in fact I set that page as a "favorite" and VOILA, in your face with all the new stuff!!
I still marvel at how many have "read" the ...Gathering Unfolding Topic - Weeee - mawkabow (like the little fellow on the Little Rascals used to say).
Thanks Rich, Di

I suppose the question I'm asking myself is, "what's the purpose of and/or why have a ranking system at all?" I am, and have been for quite some time, a member of a number of other forums that use a ranking/post count system and they've all lead to nothing but problems and arguments. Many, many times people wound up posting for no other reason than to get their post count up (commonly referred to as "Post Whoring"). Why?
I realize this is a forum who's maturity level is quite a bit higher and people here treat each other with respect and kindness. That's one of the reasons I enjoy spending time here. So, I don't believe this forum would necessarily be plauged with the same issues... or at least to the same degree. I guess I like this forum so much I'd hate to see it, even remotely, become like the others.
A couple of the forums I belong to have eliminated post counts and the environment there has greatly improved. Just food for thought...
Rich... you're doing a great job and while I haven't been here the longest, it appears as though you're having a little more fun lately. I hope that continues for all of our sakes.

The fact that we have a poll addressing that issue confirms what you said.

Hmmm ... I never even thought of it in that light. That it could be a problem. As you know, Marc, Snitz comes with the ranking feature built in. People already were having fun with it ... as in "Average Member" ... I could never foresee it becoming a source of trouble, but then ... one never knows, does one!?
I simply thought the Snitz standard labels were a bit lame ... and thought we could have some fun devising our own, really meaningless, system ... all for fun. An "issue" I never considered it!
I can see by the early results, a consensus will be hard to come by! Keep them votes coming, or I'll be forced to turn the matter over to TGATLainey!

Thank you! And, you're right. It has been fun ... again ... and I look for it to continue as such for a LONG time! You've been here long enough, by the way ... what, a year and a half, or so? ... to make a valid observation on that sort of thing!
NOTE TO NEWBIES: Though this new format has been here for - EXACTLY 2 months today! - [thus the relatively low post counts] - the Mohican Board has been here, as have some of its posters, for over 5 years now! |

Wow, I never heard of forums that rate other members based on their rank. How petty! I agree with Marc that we're a mature group, but it's also interesting to see ranks of others. I would like to change to a Cooper or LOTM theme for the rank for several reasons. Many of us have been lurking on the board for years and I admit, I was a little offended at being a "new" member. Anyone else feel the same? Changing to a different rating keeps in theme with the website. Let's admit, there's nothing "average" about Rich!
I was wondering if a field could be added to our profiles as well (nothing like suggesting extra work for Rich and Elaine!) It would be each members choice to use it or not, but I thought it could read something like: "Lurking since year 19XX or 20XX." For a long time I would read the boards but not post anything and I'm sure there are several others out there who do the same. With the group so big, I sometimes forget who I know and who I don't. Just an idea.

Very interesting, Christie ... good points!
Addressing your "concerns" ... - I am working on, with much difficulty, I might add, figuring out how to get a new user field in your profile to actually show up when you post. Actually, I've got half of it ... there is a new user field in your profiles
- That field is "Number of Gatherings Attended." If you enter info in that field, please do so in this format: 3 Gatherings Attended. This way, if I ever figure out the OTHER half, it'll show up that way in your post. Just leave it blank if you're not proud!!!
- So, you see, to add the field you request, would require the same "tech" skill I am, at the moment, lacking! However, it IS possible to enter an individualized title to REPLACE that which Snitz provides [or, the new scale - 6 levels, by the way, not 5 - my error! - that we'll put in place soon.] See: Bea, Jayne, Huggy, Ilse, Lainey - I would have to do that for you. Let me think on that one!
- Again, though, at least on this Board, the ranking "system" is intended purely for fun. The Board is only 2 months old, everyone began anew - equally - as far as this Board knew ... so, though I've tried to maintain an atmosphere somewhat similar to the Old Board, it is a New Board ... and we all began as New Members.
Just my thoughts ... and, as I speak, Cooper is beginning to pull away in the Poll! |

[quote] [b]I am an old lady and this sophisticated new board gets me confused! It's fun, but hard for me. Anyhow, re. the Poll... yes would you please use a theme unique to this website's spirit? Not necessarily classic LOTM, but LOTMLAND ....

I voted for an LOTM theme (at least I think I did).
The movie has such a wealth of pithy phrases from which to pluck soubriquets.
For instance, one that has been under discussion in the top forum:
...do not try to understand them. That is because they are a breed apart and they make no sense...
I think this is a twofer:
A Breed Apart
Makes No Sense _____
His Majesty in all his Benevolence~~Rich, perhaps?
I'm Stayin' on My Farm
Entitled to a Christian Burial
So we would know both worlds--Knows Both Worlds
My son Magua's pain is my pain. (Not sure how to rework this one.)
And of course:
I ain't your scout. And I sure ain't no damned militia.
--Ain't Your Damned Scout
Last but not least (though I'm sure you folks can think of many others), there's:
Explain to the Major we care little about toying with colonial militia because we have little to fear from the French. They have not the nature for war. Their Latinate voluptuousness combines with their Gallic laziness and the result is: they would rather make love with their faces than fight.
--Um...
~~Aim small, miss small. |
