And the Winners are… It’s that time again, when the readers speak and their voice is heard. Every year the paper asks the readers who they think is the best at what they do. The answers are published for your enjoyment and in some cases pride. In some categories it amounts to bragging rights for the year. Like all other honors and achievements it is something that can’t be taken away from you.
1. Favorite Indian Actor. Why this is always first category is a mystery. But this year was no surprise. Cherokee Indian and Oklahoma born Wes Studi is the winner in this tough category. From Pow Wow Highway to Skinwalkers, Studi has been one of the busiest Native actors around. One honor he should have received is a nomination for the Academy Awards for his star turn as “Magua” in “Last of the Mohicans.” Studi had this to say about his win: Thank you so much for the news!! I would have seen it soon in the next publication of your wonderful paper, but this notification is the “pick-me-up” of the day. And of course I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those readers for their votes, as I know this is a “hotly” contested category of your “Favorites”. I will of course continue to do my absolute best at my chosen profession, in the hopes that I can maintain the level of support the Indian community has so graciously bestowed upon my efforts. While I do not consider myself a ‘role model’, I am greatly appreciative of being seen as such and can only attribute this to the fact that I, having searched for many years, have found a career, "job" if you will, that I truly enjoy. I hope to be able to do "acting" for many years to come and again I thank each and every reader for their past and continued support. And I thank the Creator for the fact that we as Indians have created a community larger than our own respective Tribes. Together through individual effort, we can go far in this life. WaDo. Wes Studi Second place goes to Graham Greene who teamed with Studi in “Dances with Wolves.” Third place goes to Adam Beach who starred with Studi in “Skinwalkers.”

Of course we ALL know that he should have been nominated for best supporting actor as Magua...so much so that we awarded him at the 2001 Gathering. And what a hoot he was in accepting it.
This couldn't be more deserving. Great actor, great man. Thanks for telling us, Carter. |

Good for Wes! I've had the good (and sometimes bad)fortune to rub elbows with quite a few celebrities (from earlier days covering entertainment) and I can honestly say that Wes at the 2001 Gathering was by far one of THE nicest and coolest people I've ever met! Good for you, Wes!
