In looking at the pictures, two things seemed out of place. One was the extremely short waistcoat on the soldier in "Daniel and Killdeer in the Valley". Seems too short even for Rev War. And secone, the gun the Indian was holding in "Cisco showing off his physique". It seems to have a curved butt and a grease hole in the stock. I think of these as belonging to a Southern rifle of a later date. Bill, please enlighten me if I am wrong.

I don't know if you're right or wrong on those counts, Fitz, but I DO know that these installments have been so much fun! The stories are just as good as the photos. Thank, Rick!

Not sure about the curved butt, that may be a later rifle, but I did a rifle copied from a museum original for a guy a long time ago - his g-g-g grandaddy or some such had used it in F&I war, and that guy's son had used it at King's mountain - it had an oval grease hole in it, never any sign of any other kind of patchbox or such.
It was an original rifle, well documented, and had that oval grease hole but when was it put on? I'd imagine from the making, but who knows?

From that picture I would surmise that the rifle in question was a Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle.

We know what kinda butt you like a nice curve to Doc. But we's talking rifles here......now if you wanna talk butts, mine would be more Northampton County.........lotta drop or droop to both top and bottom of the butt. And short barrel. VERY short barrel.

Thank you for that wonderful mental image, Mr. Droopy-Butt.
Thank God I have some squeezin's left so I may cleanse my mind!!
This is why savvy women like Theresa and myself would never,
never, NEVER attend a movie like LOTM with a re-enactor or
a gunsmith, thank you very much! You guys would be droning
on and on about short waistcoats and the wrong buttons and
oval grease holes, whilst we would be sensibly drooling in our
trashcan-sized popcorn buckets over important things like
long black wavy hair and ripply thigh muscles!!!

Kissys!

Did you ever think how boring it would be if everything in a movie was absolutely correct? There wouldn't be anything to look for or talk about. Thank you Michael Mann!

By the way, I found a reference to a short jacket in the F&I. It came about 4 inches below the waist and was known as a Gilet. Of course it was worn by the French Milice, but that's only about 6 degrees away from a Brit.

Yes, talking about "mistakes" is popular, but nothing can spoil my favourite film. Just mean I am going to watch it again (after how many times?and look for all those mistakes and historical bluffs.

I never notice any mistakes in the movie unless they are pointed out to me...I suppose that could be because I am too wrapped up in the war and love scenes to care if there are any flaws....that and I can't take my eyes off of Uncas!!!!!!
