Claude and I went to the Sunday matinee for this one...can't afford it, otherwise...not with popcorn and coke, too (gees). Good story...a little slow in the beginning...beautiful scenery...Duvall is the lead and is his usual cowboy self. On a 1-5 scale I'd give it a 3 1/2. If you want a good ol' western, this one will do the trick...but it ain't no Dances With Wolves....nor LOTM for that matter, neither.

Saw this tonight, and I really enjoyed it. In my opinion it's worth seeing just for the scenery. And even though I knew the gunfight was comin' the whole time, and I saw the first shot on the trailer, I didn't expect the hard hitting intensity of it. The sound was like no other western, the shots actually sounded like live rounds, mores so than any other. The gunfight actually had a sense of authenticity in the way it played out that I thought was well done, even though Kostner fanned his revolver once. And Kostner kept his trademark cheese to a minimum. Overall, very well done.

SHANE was the first western where the guns actually sounded like GUNS....People actually jumped in their seats when they went off....after all the little sound effect pistol shots in all thos ewesterns .. you can even tell it when watching it on TV.. Man they BOOMED......*L*
Gotta go see this one soon.. since Kostner kept his head out of his rectum...

Duvall was definitely the lead in this one. Costner's character was more low-key until he settled some scores and dealt with his issues. I agree with you, CT, the gunfight was quite powerful. One more thing...if you have a bladder problem be sure to use the restroom before the movie starts and you might not want to drink too much beverage because there's a LOT of rain in this one.

I bought the dvd yesterday. If any of you western fans still haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Duvall's character is similar to his Lonesome Dove character, which is cool. The plot has similarities to the great western novel The Ox-bow Incident. The film was shot on an Indian reservation near Calgary and it's beautiful. And the gunfight was filmed in a documentary style with a hand held camera, that and the live round sounds combine to make an especially realistic gunfight.

Last summer I had the opportunity to drive much of I-80 once again between Michigan and California. It was a great trip because much of I-80 follows the old emigrant trails west. Made several stops at some of the historic sites such as a pony express station in Nebraska, the old cattle town Oglalla, Fort Bridger Wyoming, and Donner Pass. Saw some beautiful scenery in Wyoming which reminded me of Open Range. I love the West, and I'm going back again in a little while for a backpacking trip in Utah, another beautiful state.
