Partly because of my connection to the Mohawk Valley, this book is a definite favorite of mine! But it is also a very well written and entertaining book. Walter D. Edmonds, the author, researched his history and stuck pretty close to it.
I like the old movie, too, with Henry Fonda and Claudette Colbert. One disappointment with the movie, however, is that the actual Battle of Oriskany was not shown. Henry's character just talks about the horror of it after he arrives back home. On the other hand, the book gives a well-done and detailed account of the battle. And one of my families... the Snells... is even mentioned when the author talks about the Seven Snells who were killed there.
I highly recommend this book. (Hmmmmm... gives me the urge to read it again!) Edmonds also wrote a number of great fiction books about the early days of the Erie Canal that are very enjoyable. |
