Thanks, Pal. (Think I'll go watch The Patriot.)
I don't recall saying anything about whether it was "real" or not, Seamus. I'm not even sure what that would mean in this context.
I'm not talking "authenticity" here.
Now, The Patriot I do love, or at least like a lot. So, you can see I'm willing to make considerable allowances when it comes to authenticity.

Hey Scott, Have you heard about the planned Captain Kidd movie? It's to be directed by Ridley Scott, produced by Bruckheimer, starring Russell Crowe. Its been in the works for a few years now. Filming may begin next year. So far there's just rumors and bits of info on the interent. ...
I did hear about it, CT, and it sounds like a great idea. The thing is, I've heard essentially nothing about it in the last two years.
Sir Ridley and Crowe were originally to have shot Tripoli this past winter/spring, but it obviously didn't happened. However, I *think* it is still in the works for the coming cool weather. This one has a lot of promise too.
A sequel to Gladiator also appears to be in the works. I gather that Crowe wouldn't be the main character, but may make an appearance in the movie. In any event, it would still keep Sir Ridley busy for a while.
I've also seen talk about a movie he's planning set in the Crusades. Again, perhaps with Crowe.
So it may be a long time, if ever, before we see a Scott/Crowe version of Kidd.
Plus, there's talk of sequels to M&C/FSOTW if this one does well, and I believe Crowe has hinted that he would be open to continuing Jack Aubrey's career.
Playing Kidd as well might be just a bit too much sea-captaining for his own career, if you see what I mean.
Now, if Sir Ridley does follow through with this, and Tom Cruise should get the part, and I start to get any ideas of ignoring my inner voice and going to see it, I'd like to ask a favor. Can I call you to come over and knock some sense into me? |

Actually, I do feel much better, WW, thanks for asking.
I should note that I'm not criticizing anyone for liking the movie (i.e., the rest of the known world) or seeking converts, just presenting my own take.

Finally catching up with the rest of you on this one - saw the movie last night on DVD. I loved it. That's the way movies should be made - lots of fun. It caught my interest right off the bat & never let go. Cast & score ... magnificent! And as Theresa pointed out, not a foul word to be heard ... nor much of anything else to cause one to turn their kids' eyes away.
Great film of its genre! |

Ummmmm, I'm a slow poke about these things too. A friend of mine bought the DVD, and she told me that I just had to watch it. I'm not a big pirate movie fan, but it looked like it might be a little comical, so I decided to try it. I loved it!!! We need more movies like POTC!!!

Maybe we could do a new version of LOTM--a feminized Hawkeye and skeletonized, glow-in-the-dark Hurons, with Brittany Spears as Cora. |

Hey Scott, you might be on to something here The only change that I would make is Brittany Spears as Cora. Maybe she could be Alice though. Kay |

POTC was awesome, r u kidding me? johnny depp was great (when isnt he?) orlando bloom was... er... *goes out and strangles half-a-dozen OB fangirls* there... i feel better now... i mean, OK, the guy is... *cute*, ill allow it. but his acting skills are nil! and im not even gonna talk about kira knightly, cuz she was terrible. all in all, tho, it was a good movie. the only thing that bugs me, tho, is that they're making POTC 2 and 3! thats depressing :'( cant they leave well enough alone? |

Actually, I thought Ms. Knightly did a good job, especially for one of such tender years. I enjoyed her performance. |

I don't think so. If they do as well a job as they did with POTC, I'll be first in line! Captain Jack Sparrow is a character that begs for more. :)

My apologies for adding to this thread so late, but for those that would like a good laugh, please go to: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=1445462
This is a link to a parody of Pirates entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Red Bull. The site is Fanfiction.net, and the parody was written by a girl who just graduated from the high school where I work. It's a little Monty Python with a lot of singing and just plain fun.
For those that are able to catch this, enjoy!

I love reviving these old threads...
Has anyone gone to see POTC-2 yet? I plan to as soon as I can work it into my work and re-enacting schedule. I haven't read any professional reviews yet, but I have heard from some that it is even better than the first one. Anyone??

I haven't seen it myself, but I have heard that there is way to much CGI in it. Lack of acting, more like playing video games. I liked the first one, so I hope it's not true. I have no use for CGI at all! |

You will, Joyce, you will! My husband and I saw it last weekend and loved it. There is lots of CGI, but it doesn't overpower the characters -- as if anything could overpower CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow! After reading some unfavorable reviews, I was prepared to be disappointed, but wasn't. The tone of POTC-II is a little different from the first one -- a bit darker, maybe, and more revealing of different sides of the characters, especially Elizabeth and Captain Jack. Commodore Norrington, the pompous officer who wanted to marry Elizabeth, returns, but he's lost everything and is a down-at-the-heels reprobate who's pretty good with a sword (looks a little like DDL, actually, with long dark hair). The ending is a cliffhanger with a wonderful surprise. And for anyone with enough patience to sit through the credits, there's a one-second scene at the very end - not integral to the plot, just funny. Enjoy! |

Oh, thank you, Mary! I feel much better about going to see it, which I think I will do next weekend. (No events, so I gotta get my 18th century fix somehow!) Thanks, too, for the mini-synopsis of the storyline. I'm intrigued. Can't wait to become more acquainted with Capt. Jack!

My husband and I saw the movie and loved it. Sometimes you just need a good laugh and that's what Captain Jack and friends (and enemies) supply. It's just a fun, fun movie, so go and enjoy! Karen PS My birthday just happens to fall on Talk Like a Pirate Day and I have to say that it sure helped Jayne and I through a rough time last year. Laughter is a wonderful thing.
