I recently posted a bit about Daniel Webster. One can't think about Daniel without thinking of the Devil, which for some reason reminded me of this charming little movie (which has nothing to do with Daniel Webster).
Then when Webster came up again on Wilderness Woman's Old Man of the Mountain thread, Lainey saw fit to suggest the Devil might be yours truly. I took that as a sign that I should share this with you all.
A British production from the late fifties, the movie is based on George Bernard Shaw's play of the same name and is set in New England during the Revolution. Laurence Olivier place Gentleman Johnnie Burgoyne, Burt Lancaster is the local preacher and Kirk Douglas is a returned prodigal son wanting vengeance for his father's death at the hands of the British.
It's been a while since I saw it and I'm afraid Olivier's performance has faded from my recollection, but Douglas and Lancaster have that magic that happens when they work together.
It's very low-key, but as I said quite charming.
Unfortunately, it rarely rolls around on TV.

This seemed to vaguely stir my memory (the film, not the Daniel Webster post). Not sure it wasn't just a devilish delusion I took the liberty to search for it. Now I'm less sure & more bedeviled -

Sounds like a "witty dialogue" gem ... and it CAN be purchased through amazon.com via the Book Store pages. (You know ... alms, alms, alms for the board.)

"Set during the closing days of the American revolution, Dick Dudgeon, the town rakehell (Douglas), having previously admitted to Reverend Anderson, the local minister (Lancaster), "Pastor, there's something about you I respect, and that makes me want you for my enemy," allows himself to be mistakenly arrested as that minister by British troops. It's an act which even he, at the time, is at a loss to explain. While Dudgeon keeps the local British commandant, General Burgoyne (Laurence Olivier in what turns out to be one of his finer screen performances), alternately amused and bemused, Reverend Anderson discovers within himself a call to action as he rallies the rebel troops to rescue Dudgeon and to cut off Burgoyne's reinforcements."

I should note that I took a bit of artistic license with that suggestion.

Not too long ago, I literally stumbled upon that movie on TCM while channel surfing. Consequently, I saw only about the last half hour of it. I was intriqued, and hope to see the whole thing sometime.
Any chance I can get to view Kirk's chin dimple... |

| This is a guilty pleasure of mine along with John Wayne in "Allegeny Uprising".. hardly a historically correct piece but still fun to watch. I found a copy of it on Ebay and bought it after not having seen it in years..The British uniforms are totally hilarious..nothing but red wool and gold braid..and I won't even start on the tri-corns. |

| Yeah! I remember that Burt Lancaster/Kirk Douglas movie! Liked it! Heck, like BOTH those movies. Not historically correct or educational a'tall, but fun to watch. AND, most importantly, it was early movies like that which got me interested in those historical periods and launched my reading seriously about them. Thanks for reminding me about that one. Gotta go look for it. Or, if Lainey is able to get it through Amazon, have to buy it and put an alm in the alms box eh? (talking about the Lancaster/Douglas movie here Lainey. GOT the other one! |

Another similar movie, from the golden age of cinema, is "Unconquered". Good luck finding it, I have been trying for over a year now with 'no-joy'. If anyone can locate it, or know if they plan another re-release (maybe this time on DVD), let me know.

You need to look harder Sarge..found these in 3 minutes. Take your pick...
"Unconquered" Cecil B DeMille Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard..really a great movie..I have a copy from long ago I don't watch it enough.. but I remember Cooper's greeh fur trimmed Hunting Shirt he found in the cabin and the Transitional Swivel breech rifle he is carrying there.

Be sure to let us know how you like UNCONQUERED after you get to watch it commercial-free and uncut. Personally, I love it. Although the story is very hokey as only Cecil B. could be, there are loads of beautiful little historically accurate touches. And the military costuming is excellent - if I remember rightly, they used Cecil Lawson's "History of the Uniforms of the British Army" as their source, and there really was nothing as well done until BARRY LYNDON.

| Yes, I'd agree on Boris. I kept wondering why he was in the forest and not the Temple of Karnak or whatever. He did NOT make a very believable Indian.......mummy maybe, but just the fact that he WAS playing an Indian - I mean BORIS KARLOFF!! That alone makes the vid worth having! |

I'm looking forward to it, Two Kettles, the last time I seen 'Unconquered' was over at Highlander's house last year. As good as the movie is, given the tech level of filmakers then, the best F&I Era uniforms and civilian attire still has to go to 'Barry Lyndon'. I have to admit, that the technical advisors of 'Unconquered' certainly did their homework concerning the layout of Ft. Pitt. This was decades before Stotz did his model based on archelogical digs during the Ft. Pitt bridge project.
