This was a long time coming and I am happy to say that my son's school was involved in collecting money to make the memorial possible.

That's absolutely wonderful Bea, and just shows that gratitude IS genuine and long lasting.

Yes, you're right.. There was time here in Canada when our veterans seemed all but forgotten but over the past 5 years or so things are being done and now our children know about the sacrifices our veterans made for them..for freedom!!
I was very touched while watching the ceremony and see all of our brave vets with their poppies and emtions written allover their faces. I guess we can't imagine what it must have been like to return to this place..I was also rather pleased to see how grateful the French were for our efforts during the war..

I have one question though: was the dedication mentioned in your news, Dutch news or US news??

I don't recall anything here in the news about this most honorable event. The main news here is trying to find WMD in Iraq in order to justify us kicking their butt.

That sentiment was echoed by Jean-Pierre Raffarin, prime minister of France. He spoke passionately in French of Canada's role in liberating his country not once, but twice, and of the sacrifices made not only in Normandy, but also in Dieppe and Vimy.

Well, truth be told I am not too surprised.. Not too many Canadian news get picked up by American stations other than the Mad Cow Disease..In the meantime we get quite a few US stories..:)
