One of the great scenes in the western genre (in my opinion) is the stagecoach chase in Shalako http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063592/ I won't reveal the details--it surprised me how things turned out!
If only the rest of the movie was as good! |

| It has been at least 15 years since I watched this. All I can remember was that I had a great deal of trouble sitting through the whole thing, it was such a dog. Connery and Bardot??? Oh puhleeze! Woody Strode as an Apache??? Oh come onnnnn! Funny, I don't remember at all the stagecoach chase... |

| I recall seeing this one as a child and it scared the living daylights out of me Dark Woods. I loved Sean Connery even then, that accent. Anyways, the stagecoach, I remember that one and how that one lady ends up with the "beads" I think it was. That was different to "wearing" them I suppose. Her "lover" watching from afar and not helping. It is a good movie but Bridgette Bardot and her "racoon eyes" just too much. I so wanted to wash her face and still do to this day. Talk about "too much make-up" and someone else did that to her, yuck. |

Yep Irishgirl, the way she ended up with the beads is over the top scary, to my mind! This photo from near the end of the stagecoach scene is currently on sale on ebay--I might bid on it (it is misslabeled as Bridgette Bardot, when it is "bead lady" Honor Blackman.

Honor Blackman, thanks DW. I couldn't recall her name before when I posted. I like that "bead lady". Of course I also recall her as "***** Galore" from James Bond again with Mr Sean Connery.
I am fond of NA men but have to admit, those ones were way too scary and I definitely would not want to have met them. Give me Uncas and Chingy anyday of the week. At least they would have taken the beads and worn them instead of the "alternative". |

Have you ever seen the movie Light? Honestly you would not want to have been "captured" by those NA men. Not even you could "charm" your way out of that predicament. Do you know what they did with the "beads"?. It definitely would not have been a "romantic encounter" instead the opposite "your worst nightmare" right DW?. |

But since you insist, just make certain to ditch the stolen necklace before you get on the stagecoach. What woman needs jewelry, when NA men are competing for her attention! |

While I love "Lonesome Dove", "Tombstone", and "The Magnificent Seven". I still would have to vote for "The Searchers". I think that it is the best movie John Wayne ever made and quite possibly the best western ever made as well. It was one of the first westerns that you had to "think" about. The story wasn't as straight forward as all the others. You have to watch it two or three times to get all the nuances of the backstory. The Duke did not play is usual good guy white hat character.

| I couldn't agree more, Hawkeye. I believe I've posted my opinion (probably more than once) on here that The Searchers is the best Western ever. Interesting sidelight...in the filming of almost all Duke films, John Wayne was easy-going & nice to be around, but not this time. The grim character of Ethan Edwards really affected him & he was not to light-hearted during the filming (I get the impression that most people wanted to stay away from JW during this filming. |

Some trivia about it from IMDB:
Western star Harry Carey died in 1947. Director John Ford cast Carey's wife (Olive Carey) as Mrs. Jorgensen (the mother) and Carey's son (Harry Carey Jr.) as one of the sons (Brad) as a tribute to Carey. In the closing scene with John Wayne framed in the doorway, Wayne holds his right elbow with his left hand in a pose that Carey fans would recognize as one that he often used. Wayne later stated he did it as a tribute to Carey. Off-camera, Olive watched.
Lana Wood played young Debbie Edwards and Natalie Wood, who was Lana's older sister by eight years, played teenaged Debbie Edwards
According to John Wayne in a 1974 interview, John Ford hinted throughout the movie that Ethan had had an affair with his brother's wife, and was possibly the father of Lucy and Debbie. This meant Ethan's thirst for vengeance stemmed not from the murder of his brother, but of the woman Ethan had loved. This was so subtle that many viewers at the time missed it altogether.
Buddy Holly's famous song "That'll Be the Day" was inspired by John Wayne's frequent use of the phrase in this film.
Just before the Indian raid on the Edwards homestead, the tombstone that Debbie hides next to reveals the source of Ethan's glaring hatred for Native Americans. The marker reads: "Here lies Mary Jane Edwards killed by Commanches May 12, 1852. A good wife and mother in her 41st year." Sixteen years earlier, Ethan's own mother was massacred by Comanches.
Was voted the both the 13th Greatest Film of all time and the Greatest Western of all time by Entertainment Weekly.

| Yeah yeah I know what the clicker is for but since I like Burt Lancaster I wanted to see the movie even though I knew it would "stink". The white woman/Indian girl was just awful as well. Her name was Jean Peters I think (never heard of her). Burt did the best he could but a white dude as an Indian just does not work but that was how the "injuns" were portrayed back then in those old westerns. At least he did not say "how" |

Did he say "why"?  
As for Jean Peters, she play in quite a few flicks from the late 40's into the 80's, including Captain from Castile and Viva Zapata. Perhaps she was most famous because of her 2nd husband, Howard Hughes. She passed away from leukemia in 2000. |

| Looks like you've got a lot of catching up to do. Get some DVD's and a good remote and spend a couple of weeks watching old flicks. Sort of like Mystery Science Theater. You familiar with that one? One of my favorites from the 90's. |
