175 years ago today, the Alamo defenders were killed at dawn.

One of the most poignant historical letters I have read was this famous one from the commander of the Alamo, William "Buck" Travis:

Commandancy of the Alamo
Bexar, Feby. 24th 1836

To the People of Texas &
all Americans in the world --

Fellow citizens & compatriots -- I am besieged by a
thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna --
I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannon-
ade for 24 hours & have not lost a man -- The enemy
has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the
garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken
-- I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, &
our flag still waves proudly from the walls -- I shall nev-
er surrender or retreat.
Then, I call on you in the name
of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the Amer--
ican character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch --
The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no
doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five
days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain
myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never
forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his coun-
try --
Victory or Death.
William Barret Travis
Lt. Col. Comdt.

P.S. The Lord is on our side -- When the enemy
appeared in sight we had not three bushels of corn --
We have since found in deserted houses 80 or 90 bush-
els & got into the walls 20 or 30 heads of Beeves.

I'll bet we all know what young Wade is doing today! Miss him around here, but keep up with him on Facebook. I am absolutely thrilled for him and what he is accomplishing. He is where he wants and needs to be.

I finally watched the most recent version of "The Alamo" on TV recently. Yeah, I know... just a little behind the times. I thought it was really well done. I enjoyed it a lot.

Remember the Alamo!

I got to meet Wade and his dad at the Alamo art show in San Antonio yesterday! And I'm now the owner of a beautiful print of one of his illustrations. He did a great job with the show. Here's hoping he has much continued success following his dreams!

So Crockett and Travis were standing on the wall of the Alamo looking out into the early dawn when hundreds of Mexicans start moving toward them. Crockett says to Travis, "I didn't know the landscapers were coming today."

I'm here all week!

Try the veal.

That's wonderful, Red! You are fortunate that you got to see him "in his element." I hope you gave him a big hug from all of us.

That's beautiful, - and a true sign of "things to come", ... as it's turned out.
