Since this is the 20th anniversary of the filming of LOTM, it just seemed like there should be a Gathering. Tough job, but somebody has to do it, so I headed out on my own. First stop was the Post Office in Marion, NC for a quick visit with the guy who made all of this happen. I believe it is the first time I have seen him in 7 years. That has to change. Then it was on to Table Rock. I put off the mandatory stop at Louise's until later.

Then it was on to the gorge for the waterfalls and such.
The area where Eric first stops to tell his tales of the filming. This is where the food tents were set up, and fell. Note the new gravel on the trail. It is large crushed rock and very difficult to walk on. It turns under your feet and would cut moccasins to pieces in a short time. A lot of people were walking on the sites of the trail to avoid it. Luckily I was wearing boots designed for rocks, but even with those you had to watch your step. The NPS, your tax dollars at work! Also, in the visitors center there were no snacks and only bottled water at $2 a bottle. They are certainly missing a golden opportunity to make bucks off tourists by providing something to eat and drink that they actually want. Good for Louise's, though.

The is the famous tree. Note the gravel. Just doesn't look right. Couldn't make the movie with that stuff on the ground!

Didn't see any purple pigeons. Or panthers either, purple, pink, or otherwise.

Then on to a spot I have never been before. I always stopped with the Chimney View. This time I went on the the Gorge View, then to Erwins View. This is the Gorge View.
Then Erwins View. You can see the Chimney just to the left of the falls.

After a quick stop, well maybe not so quick, at Famous Louise's Rock House Restaurant, it was on to Lake James.

| The trails to Table Rock seem more overgrown than in past years. Maybe the Mohicans were not there to trample them down. I don't know. But the place where you turn off the trail to climb up to the top of Table Rock was not really visible at all. But there is a way to find it. Just follow the trail until you see a small marker nailed to a tree that says NC Wildlife Commission - Bear Preserve, then turn left right beside the sign. |

Fitz,
Nice to see it all again after twenty years; this goes right along with my own "reveries" over on the movie page! I'd never recognize the Fort William Henry site if you hadn't identified it, but the Linville Falls area looks very familliar. ( Even despite the crushed rock! ) Now what about the "Massacre" site? |

| I watched LOTM again last night and when I watched the scenes around Cameron's Cabin, I still can't see how they could all fit in to the land we visited last summer. The level area available just doesn't look to be that large. Or course there are camera angles, and the possibility that portions were shot somewhere else and edited in. But that is one thing that still puzzles me. |

It's all right there, Fitz. It looked a lot different back in '91 then it does now, based on those shots Stephanie sent me last year. Even in '93 it was quite overgrown, though easily identifiable. Not being with you at the Gathering, I wonder ... were you in the right place?

It would be a good thing to see many of my old friends in 2012. We have not all disappeared, only hiding in the shadows where we feel safe. The life of a Courier de Bois is not an easy one and there are many enemy in the forest.

Fitz, you SO ROCK!!! Those are some great pictures! I have had an awful week (lost my father-in-law although it was expected, a very close friend almost died in a motorcycle accident being stupid, and life has just been biting at my heels at every turn) and this just made my day!!! Those vistas just renew my soul!!!!

| Thank you very much, GG. I had planned to go back to Mohicanland last Saturday and take a few more pics of the Barnardsville area. The Elk Hunt area and Tracking the War Party. But I ran out of time. I did get to the French Broad Rifles range for a few minutes and talked with a couple of their members. I had planned to make a trip to Dupont Forest and maybe Webb's Headquarters as well. Maybe I can do that in a couple of weeks. But for the shear beauty of it all, nothing beats Linville Gorge. |

Thanks for the pictures, Fitz! It seems this time of year, my thoughts always turn to Linville Gorge and other Mohicanland sites, and I practically yearn to be there. I'm like you, sometimes I go by myself and just enjoy the scenery, but nothing beats a Gathering. Since you know the way, maybe you should plan the next one! 
On a sad note, the hemlock damage in Linville Gorge is astounding... |

Caitlin, I often check in and lurk about, but not as much as I would like. Life has it's own way of directing our path. Time goes by and we become older. Families grow and there are little ones that need our attention. So we do our best to teach them the lessons they need. In doing so we grow as well. But no amount of time can erase the fond memories I have of my Mohican family and the growing desire to see them. I miss you all as well.
