I have read the message board for about 3 months. I am impressed at the knowledge of the members. I am not only a fan of the movie, but of the novels as well. Cooper, as an author is greatly unknown and unappreciated. Even though he uses over the top language and his use of Native American cultural beliefs are a bit questionable, he writes action packed adventure and "keep you on the edge" scenes that are still alive with every new reading. I hope that someone will read this novel again as you watch the movie or however. One feeds off the other.
Welcome to the board Boone! There is a lot more to the site than the messageboard and some good articles here and there in regards to Mr. Cooper as well. There are also a few "Cooper experts" that seem to pop in just when a Cooper discussion arises.

I am determined that some day... when my life has calmed down a bit... I will have more free time to be able to tackle this book again. I have made two aborted attempts, mostly because I just didn't have the large blocks of time needed to be able to relax and become fully absorbed in it. But I really, really want to! I know that I will like it.

WW- you should maybe try "Deerslayer" or "The Prairie" next. They're both written better than LOTM. More action, less flowery words. They just flow easier.
