. . . is very bland -- just a star superimposed over the outline of Texas, with the caption "The Lone Star State." Surprisingly dull, for Texas (or maybe my image of Texas is all wrong). Surely there's some instantly recognizable historical image they could have chosen to symbolize Texas ....

btw. a piece of trivia, the first 'six flags' park was six flags over texas... name the six flags and their significance...
I know most of the answer. I have a good friend that lives in Texas and she will send me Texas trivia from time to time. The significance of them is that they are all flags that have flown over Texas at one time or another. I know that there has been the Mexican flag, the Confederate flag, and the American flag  . There are three more, but my mind just won't work right now. Maybe France?  I really can't remember. I am just home for lunch and I see a trivia question, and I just can't pass it up.

the six flags that flew over texas are:
nstional flags of spain, mexico, republic of texas, usa, csa, and the state of texas
more trivia - texas was one independant nation annexed as a state, name another...
bonus question - name 2 stillborn states...

I believe the other state that was first a nation was the Republic of California.
Stillborn? Hmmmmmm... would that be Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands??? |

if california was ever an independant nation, i don't know...
hawaii was definatly an independent nation, and was taken over by american fruit growers
the 2 states are franklin {the western part of tennesee} and sequoya {the eastern half of what became oklahoma, which would have been the first indian state...}
the only split of a state i know of is west virginia from virginia |

Maybe somebody could enlighten me on this, but wasn't there at one time some movement in Alaska to make it its own nation? Or was it some sort of independent nation before we annexed it, like Hawaii was? I'd like some enlightenment on that one.
Here in ever-lovin' "Secessions R Us" South Carolina, we have a county called Horry (pronounced O-ree) which is where Myrtle Beach is, that is the square mileage of the state of Connecticut. At one time there was a movement there to make it its own little nation back in the days between the Revolution and the Civil War...the county was separated from the REST of the state by rivers and bordered the ocean, and there was a movement to call it the Independent Repubic of Horry. Folks down there still have that slogan on their county seal...
