Taking what for me is - (well-deserved [IMHO]) - a "vacation" from the rigors [again, for me] of Mohicanland, I spent more than my usual allotment of time playing my very favorite computer game - Gettysburg - this weekend.
If you are fascinated by the event, and enjoy game-playing, this one is for you; it really, really is!
- Beautifully detailed, in full color, game "board"
- All leaders are present; all regiments, brigades, divisions, & corps
- Realistic battle strengths & historical orders of battle
- Long-range rifled artillery, as well as Napoleons which fire cannister at infantry at close range
- Cavalry units
- Small scenarios, big scenarios, linked scenarios, and the best of the best: ALL 3 Days Scenario [add-on]
- Excellent 3D graphics
- Historical uniforms, etc.
- Scenario variants [including historical, random, and a little of both]
- REAL-TIME PLAY! No movement turns, everything happens at once, as in life. You react to your opponent [computer] and it does to you.
- Excellent AI - various levels
I am addicted to the 3-Day affair - the complete thing ... it begins at 7:45AM on July 1, with Henry Heth's Confederate lead brigades bumping into stubborn Yankee Cavalry under John Buford, and can end in any number [unlimited] of fashions, including recreating the doomed Pickett's Charge. Everything is there - Jubal Early - The Lutheran Seminary - John Reynolds - Culps Hill - Robert E. Lee - Devil's Den - George Meade - Pitzer's Woods - EVERYTHING! You truly take command & alter the flow of battle. As the battle unfolds, it gets to be more & more a challenge trying to control the increasing numbers of units and stay on top of all the action over the huge field.
The soldiers, horses, artillery are all 3D moving things - very realistic - smoke, gunfire, screams, dispatches, orders. You can skirmish, form up in column, advance in brigade fashion, dig in ... it's all there.
What a blast!
I highly recommend this great game playable alone, or via the Internet, on your PC!
Firaxis Games [There's also an Antietam game!] Enjoy!
[WARNING: Do not hang your flank in mid-air! The computer will eat you alive! ]

That sounds excellent Rich. I love strategy games, especially anything historically based. Now if someone only made a F&I War game for Macintosh I'd be in business. Have you played much "Risk!"? A few years ago I had a version of the game for Playstation which allowed you to play on North America at several stages of history, very fun. Of course the traditional board game with some friends and some beers is a better way to spend a long, cold winter night. Has anyone played any of the "Medal of Honor" games? Any thoughts? |
