If Michael Mann were to film his adaptation of "Deerslayer" who would you cast in the lead roles? Keep in mind Hawkeye and Chingachgook are young men, middle 20's. It's 1745-ish. Your leads include: Deerslayer Chingachgook Hurry Harry Thomas Hutter Hetty Hutter Judith Hutter Hist

I've never read these books, perhaps I should.I do recall an animated version that used to be shown around Thanksgiving time in my youth that mirrored LOTM. |

Yes, Ellie, I can see Orlando Bloom as a younger Hawkeye! I am also thinking of another actor... whose name I cannot think of... He goes by Jim or James... starts with "S" I think. Drat! I hate getting old!
But... I'm confused, Susquesus. (Another sign of old age.) Isn't Chingachgook older than Hawkeye, by about 15-20 years or so? I haven't read any of the books, but going by the movie, I thought he was an older father-figure? |

That is one of the big differences between the novels and film Wilderness Woman. In the novels, Chingachgook and Hawkeye are more like brothers, same age more or less. Uncas is Chingachgooks son with Hawkeye as an uncle figure. If you read one more make it "Deerslayer". It is the last written, though chronologically it is the first story. It is subtitled, "The First Warpath", and tells the story of Hawkeye and Chingachgooks' first adventure. Hawkeye attains "Killdeer", kills his first mingo, encounters his first love interest, in addition we meet Chingachgooks' wife (a Delaware fox, named Wah-ta Wah). A lot of heavy stuff happens here. And as it was the last written it is also the most well-written, the speech isn't quite as "Olde" as in "Pioneers" or "LOTM", the words just flow better. |

A study of the age of Natty Bumppo in the five novels can be found at http://www.mohicanpress.com/mo06032.html It takes a much more careful reader than me to remember the hints at ages (or maybe I get distracted by the scenery). In the books Natty's foster father is grandfather Uncas (as opposed to Chingachgook's son Uncas (Uncas being a famous Mohican chief's name in historical fact)). Natty and Chingachgook learn to hunt together growing up in the Delaware camps. They scout for the Royal Americans together. In the books they are similar ages. |

As I was looking at a sad but hopefull quotation in The Deerslayer, it struck me that the people who build movies view books as starting points. If you take the action of The Last Of The Mohicans and splice in the hunting and the love interest in The Deerslayer, you get one heck of a film! A movie about a hero who thinks too much probably doesn't sell. |

Hugh! Speaking of getting lost in the scenery, I was reading The Deerslayer since I'm triple pager duty 1700 Friday till 0800 Monday and ran into the statement by the newly minted Hawkeye:
"Big Sarpent - so called for his wisdom and cunning, Uncas is his ra'al name -all his family being called Uncas until they get a title that has been 'arned by deeds."
So Chingachgook is Uncas, too! |
