At approximately 9:00 a.m. eastern time this morning, NASA lost contact with Space Shuttle Columbia as it passed over the north central part of Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth/Waco). The Shuttle had started its descent as it prepared to land, 16 minutes later, in south Florida. The news is showing video of what appears to be the Shuttle breaking up and falling to Earth, and there were reports of loud explosions in that part of Texas at that same time.

It was in January of 1986 that the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff, and sadly, it appears that we have now lost another Shuttle and its crew.

Let us pray for that brave crew and their families, as we continue to hope for the best, even as we fear the worst.

Yes, the country is saddened yet again. It takes us all right back to 1986, doesn't it? Terrible, terrible images.
God Bless them and their families.

This is deja vu all over again for me....
here I sat, just turned on the news at 6:am (pacific time) & watched the events unfold, from loss of contact to the footage & realization that we lost the shuttle & crew....

I sat there & struggled with emotions & memories, for this did take me back to 1986 & the loss of Challenger & my cousin, Dick Scobee, who was commander of that ill-fated mission.

My prayers do go out to all the families, to those at NASA, & to all touched by this terrible tragedy.

Oh my God, Gasaka, I am so sorry. I'm sure this opens up all those wounds again. What a brave and noble way to serve your country.

As the Cherokee say "Wado" (thank you) for the kind words about my cousin. Yes, it opened old wounds, but please, I didnt post that for sympathy (I appreciate the kind words just the same though).

As Theresa said "what a brave & noble way to serve your country".
So true, so true...

Dick carried on a family tradition that has seen Scobee's (Scobie's) from our family serve since the War of 1812, thru the War Between The States, San Jaun Hill, thru to the present (including myself, a Desert Storm era vet, albeit stateside).
We're all proud of him (& the rest who give their lives for us, rather it be in times of peace or war).

I hope one day when our S.A.M.S. (Scottish-American Military Society)post is reconstitued here to name it after Dick Scobee, its the least I can do in his memory.

Anyhow, I think what really got me this time is as I've watched tributes from the Columbia seven's friends & family pour in, is the faith in the almighty most of these brave folks had, & how they lived this faith & had an effect on their community (& I believe thru these testimonies still are). Powerful stuff!

Yes Anthony, peace on earth indeed!
God bless,
TEH a.k.a. GasakaSoquilla (Lighthorse)

January 27, 1967 The Apollo 1 caught fire during testing, killing Ed White, Guss Grissom and Rodger Chaffee. Our space program has taken another hit. But when we stop and think of the amazing things it has acomplished since NASA called those test pilots and fighter pilots to come and try something unthinkable, We must amazed and impressed with all of their courage. When thinking of those first to go into space, how there have not been more lives lost is in itself a miracle.

These men and women are the heart and soul of what America stands for. May they and their familys rest in peace knowing that America is proud and honored

Thank you to those who serve our country in Space, on Land, on the Sea and in the Air. Your county is greatful.

I too saw his wife this morning on Good Morning America. She seems to be such a wonderful person. Read a letter that her daugter wrote for the Columbia children. This letter will be read at the memorial today. It was very touching.
