Unlikely Source of Recruits Proceeds According to Ministry of Defense Initiative

By Joseph Hummel

BBC America special correspondent

Thursday, 1 April, 2010 , 08:00 GMT: The deployment of American citizens in British armed forces continues following the declaration of a new mobilization effort by the Ministry of Defense last Tuesday.

"300 soldiers have already been embarked and a further 1,200 are expected to be ready within one week," says a spokesman for the Ministry.

Armed Forces Minister Bill Rammell, speaking in London earlier this week, formally announced the initiative by the Ministry to augment the numbers of active-duty military personnel from a source "surprisingly not previously considered," he said.

Under the new plan approximately 3,000 American re-enactors are being called up by the British armed forces for active military duty. An emphasis has been placed upon those recreating the American War of Independence, a small colonial skirmish which occurred in the late 18th century.

When asked why this specific genre is the focus of the effort, General Sir David Richards, Chief of the General Staff, stated, "Our lads made a cock-up of the entire conflict in 1775, and it is more than time that they redeem themselves."

The American re-enactors are already fully armed, equipped, and organized under military standards. This has made the transition from a casual hobby to active service a simpler process. The Ministry notes that only Americans portraying British soldiers are being considered.

"Portrayers of American, French, German, and any other nationality involved are just not up to the requirements of the modern British armed forces," says a spokesman for the Ministry. "They don't wear red."

Foreign Secretary David Milibrand says the effort is perfectly legal under British law, citing the fact that all American portrayers of British soldiers are required to swear an oath of loyalty to the King and sign their names to service documents. He adds, "Because England is now ruled by a Queen and not a King has no practical bearing upon the situation."

A special review by the Foreign Office revealed that nothing in the Treaty of Paris prevented this implementation by the British armed forces. Under Article 7 of that Treaty, the Kingdom of Great Britain was required to remove their armies and garrisons from United States territory.

"We're just correcting a previous oversight, and gaining a valuable return," said a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office.

Following the announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared that the effort by the British armed forces, "Serves to strengthen the ties between our two great nations." The United States does not plan to contest the mobilization.

And a Happy April Fool's Day to you, too, Duncan, me lad!

Life's journey is not to
arrive at the grave safely
in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting
'...holy sh*t ...what a ride!'
