Not surprising from our man, Gibbs. Of course, "he lies"!

If any of you watched any of Obama's campaign rally in Minnesota yesterday - yes, I said campaign - it should be evident to you - if eyes and ears are truly open - what a partisan man he is. He is not Presidential at all. Reminds me a lot of Spiro Agnew with his divisive 'us VS them rhetoric'. I can't wait to vote against him a second time.

He does lie, and his boss does too, and I am glad that Rep. Joe Wilson had the stones to say it to the face of 'The One'. It is also under-reported by the 'mainstream' media that Rep. Wilson's re-election campaign fund has recieved a massive influx of individual donations afterwards

What's up with "sic semper tyrannis," Sarge? As far as I know, the phrase "thus always to tyrants" means only one thing in American history: it was what John Wilkes Booth shouted after shooting Abraham Lincoln. Kind of a heavy rhetorical weapon to bring to a calm and rational discussion, if you ask me. Wouldn't "semper fi" or "keep the faith" or something along those lines do just as well?

I thought it was pretty self-explanitory; as it was used after my thoughts on Rep. Wilson saying to Pres. Obama, "You lie". "Thus always to tyrants", as it refers to the calling a liar, a liar.

Of course, you will read into it as it fits into your beliefs...

History

The phrase is attributed to Marcus Junius Brutus, the most famous figure in the assassination of Julius Caesar on March 15, 44 BC: however, it is more probably a later dramatic invention, as Roman historians of the period did not record it. In American history, John Wilkes Booth shouted the phrase after shooting Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, in part because of the association with the assassination of Caesar.[2][3] Timothy McVeigh was wearing a T-shirt with this phrase and a picture of Lincoln on it when he was arrested on April 19, 1995, the day of the Oklahoma City bombing.[4]

Thanks for the support and the history lesson, Sus. I didn't know about McVeigh's t-shirt. Wow.

And Sarge, who elected you God? Moderator, yes, but being a moderator doesn't entitle you to determine whether Sus's contribution, or mine, or anyone else's, is "original" enough to be a part of this debate. You haven't bought into that "liberals are wimps" idea, have you? Because you might be surprised. We might even start quoting Latin expressions about tyrants.

Calm down, friends. I have made it a point at this stage of my life to challenge most every mis-truth regarding politics/values that is spoken in my presence. At least as I see it. No more letting it slide. So, I know where you're are coming from. This battle is too big. But, please, let us all calm down.

Rich, you don't know what this means to me! The instances in my 58 years where anyone has told me to calm down can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand (ask Seamus), so this is practically an achievement. But I do respect you advice and will endeavor to heed it.

Now...THAT is scary! 'oldest' friends?.....yeah, I know what you mean! You were just a kid back then.........with a burning desire to learn hang-gliding.BTW, folks, she was successful, too, except when it came time to haul the thing up the narrow steps to her 2nd floor apartment; then the phone would ring, I'd saddle up and go help. I still think of that when I go to the crocery store, Mary!

First off, "No" she isn't right. Secondly, I'm not hiding behind anything Sus, for I know that I am right.

quote:

I'm glad you got that correct, since that phrase was not part of any historical record. (Unless you include it as a history of English Literature) What you failed to mention was that pinhead McVeigh thought it meant, 'Death to Tyrants' (I read the LE transcripts of his arrest interview from 1995), when it clearly does not. I took a liking to that phrase the first time I read Shakespeare's 'Julius Ceasar' at age 14, and have refered to it since... And will again in the future!

quote:
BookwormMG then added: And Sarge, who elected you God? Moderator, yes, but being a moderator doesn't entitle you to determine whether Sus's contribution, or mine, or anyone else's, is "original" enough to be a part of this debate.

First off BW, you lack both the personal familiarity, and life experience, to make any such comment about me. Secondly, it is not my position as moderator that caused me to say what I did about susquesus' usual lack of insight, since anyone can see that he one of those people here who is famous for usually making a short, jabbing statement, with no factual evidence to back it up, and then scurry back 'under the baseboard' when challenged with a factual rebutal.

And for the record, everyone here knows that I have never deleated such 'drive-by' postings from this board (and I never will), and I do so for two reasons. First and foremost, I do believe that people have a right to be heard (vulgarities and personal threats of violence are excluded) regardless of how ill-informed, childish or ignorant they may sound. And for the second, such behavior only validates what we believe of the Modern Left on my side of the political aisle, so I like to leave it in place for all to see.

quote:
BookwormMG then said: You haven't bought into that "liberals are wimps" idea, have you? Because you might be surprised. We might even start quoting Latin expressions about tyrants.

Hmmmmm, I don't recall ever saying that "Liberals are wimps". Although for the record, I haven't seen any real Liberals for many, many years. What I do see are examples of the Modern Left (Cultural Marxist, Statists, Anarchists, etc.), and I know they are not wimps. They are bullies, buffoons and bigots, but not wimps.

WW, I do respect your opinion, although I cannot agree with you on this. I simply stated what I have observed of his past actions (I explained that in my above posting), and I did so without attacking him personally. I may have come off a bit terse, but I have mentioned this to him many times before in other threads, and I was obviously too vague and/or soft in the delivery; so this time I had to clearly state that I was onto his game.

My dear friend Sarge, I have to say that if there is anything you are not... it is "soft and vague." You see, nobody likes to be goaded into giving their responses and opinions, especially when they know they are going to be verbally attacked for doing so. Bullying does not work, and it is not pleasant for the recipient. I am sorry to have to say it, but that is the way you come across sometimes... a bully... like with that challenge to Sus, and you have done much the same to Mary. No one likes being treated that way.

Having said that, I would also like to say that your political knowledge absolutely amazes me! I don't know how you find the time to do all of the reading that you must do to keep abreast of it all, and I have no clue how you retain it all. I can't hold a candle to you in that regard, and I always learn so much from reading your posts.

But.... can you be a little nicer with your debating techniques and the way you say things? Debating is not "a game." It is supposed to be a friendly discussion, without accompanying bullying and rudeness. I think we would all appreciate it a great deal.

Thank you WW for finding such a civil and tactful way to express that. You are indeed a lady.

There will be no honest discussion on this board as long as people can expect nothing more than verbal evisceration, name calling and implication in return for their opinion.

And Sarge- you're onto my game? Well then I'm onto yours as well. If mine is to leave short jabbing statements with no factual evidence to back them up- which reveals my lack of insight and my childish, ill-informed ignorance then certainly yours is the use of bullying, arrogant, pompous, self-righteous rants to intimidate your opponents into silence. That's not just my opinion. That is the opinion of multiple board members that have privately contacted me in my role as moderator. Many of them agree with you politically, they just don't like your harsh tone.

You want people to debate you and put thought into their arguements? Try civility, try manners, try tact- they go a long way with people.

If you're not interested in honest, open debate- keep it up. Pretty soon you'll have the board to yourself.

Boys and girls ...

Stop it now ... argue to your hearts content, but leave the name calling and insults out of it. Sus and Sarge ... you are both good guys. I am not going to be sending PMs of support to either of you. You know where my beliefs lay. I support your right to say the things you feel as to where you are on the issues.

Do I lock the thread? Close the forums in question? Remove all moderator capabilities? All those choices seem poor to me. A shame it just can't be what it should be ... a discussion ... heated or otherwise.

All I can say is this:
