U.S. Troops in Afghanistan Run to Remember 9-11
Friday, September 11, 2009 . Sept. 11: U.S. service members run to mark Sept. 11 at the main U.S. base in Bagram, north of Kabul, Afghanistan.
BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan American troops in Afghanistan donned shorts and sneakers Friday to run in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, as they fight a war that was born of that day but now faces waning public support.
About 1,000 service members ran about 5.5 miles at the main U.S. base, both to commemorate the anniversary and remember troops who have died in nearly eight years of fighting.
The U.S. and its allies first invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 to oust the Taliban regime for sheltering Al Qaeda leaders who planned the attacks. The Taliban were quickly routed, but the militants regrouped and have mounted an increasingly strong insurgency over the past three years.
Organizers of Friday's race, which also was held at two other bases, called it an act of defiance against insurgents who have killed more American troops this year than in any other since the beginning of the conflict. August was the deadliest month for U.S. troops so far, with 51 killed.
"Our soldiers are running in the heart of Taliban territory, where the attacks on America were planned," a military statement said.

Can never, ever forget the importance and ramifications of this day and the days that followed ... George W. Bush demonstrated what Commander in Chief is all about.
I will never forget.
Today, we have a day of national service to run out and plant trees to support an agenda ... not to mention an unbelievably embarrassing fiasco on the Potomac River, completely erroneously reported by CNN ... as a real attack with rounds fired by the Coast Guard. Turns out, it was a training exercise. What complete MORON decided on this ... on 9/11?????
I can't take it ... I would LOVE to forget this!

I had no idea that names were still being added to the list of victims of the 9/11 attacks, but they are, at least in New York City. The latest -- the 2,752nd victim -- is a man who could have fled but stayed to help others leave, as a result was caught in the plume of contaminated dust and smoke, fell ill within a year, was diagnosed with lymphoma, and died in October of last year.

I quite imagine he won't be the last to be a victim in that manner. There will be more. |

Proud, shameless plug here---this guy is my cousin, my Mom's sister's son, 6 months younger than me. We were Heckel and Jeckel when we were kids! He didn't turn out to bad for a kid who nearly flunked out of high school! Still one of my best pals today. Now that he teaches at Penn State, an hour from here, (He set up and runs the Criminal Forensics curriculum there), we get together often to quaf a few and reminisce about our ill-spent youth! Very interesting fellow......

Now there's a guy who's made a difference! I remember meeting him, Mike. There's definitely a resemblance between the two of you. Glad to read that he's made a full recovery from the heart attack. And as the article suggests, it was almost to be expected that he'd have one, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders as he was. |

Aye Sachem; I made a trip to Shanksville on Friday morning, and I couldn't think of a better way to spend a day of rememberence.
quote: richfed followed with: ... George W. Bush demonstrated what Commander in Chief is all about.
And he didn't go on a world-spanning 'Apology Tour', or allow himself to be lectured by a pair of marxist thugs like Chavez and Ortega either (Hell, I'd bet old GW wouldn't have even allowed them to appear before him... unless they were in handcuffs and destined for GitMo )
quote: richfed then noted: Today, we have a day of national service to run out and plant trees to support an agenda ...
As I noted before, this is not the Democratic Party of days long-since passed. This is not the same DNC which was founded by patriotic, hard-working people who proudly (and correctly) traced their roots to Thomas Jefferson. This is the post-1968 bastardized version of the DNC, where Cultural Marxists and Statist Elites reign supreme over an army of 'community-organized' Leeches.
Would FDR have refered to the attack on Pearl Harbor as a 'man-made catastrophe'? D-Day as part of an 'overseas contingency operation'?
Think about it...
quote: Monadnock Guide asked: Is there ANYONE in Washington with two working brain cells???
Unfortunately he left for Texas on January 20th of this year...

Your cousin does sound like a very interesting fellow, and most likely runs in the same professional circles as my dad does at 'Happy Valley'. After his retirement from the PSP, he has spent a great deal of time teaching POLEX and POSIT courses for the Penn State Criminal Justice program, so it is possible that they know each other.

That would be cool if they do know each other. I'm due to go shooting with my dad later this week (the NTI combat matches are coming up soon), so I'll ask him too.
