Some time back, I posted about the USS New York. She is a newly built warship that was launched and christened on March 1, 2008. She is a very special warship that will enter the War on Terror, because her bow stem contains 7-1/2 tons of steel that was recovered from the World Trade Center after 9/11.
She is due to be commissioned this fall. She will arrive in New York Harbor on November 2nd, to a gala reception. There will be several days of ceremonies, visitations by 9/11 families and first responders, and she will be commissioned on November 7th. After that, she will be open to the public for several more days, then will deploy for her first duty.
Today, my local newspaper had an article about her new commander. It is a very big deal for us here in Binghamton. Commander F. Curtis Jones was born and raised in Binghamton. And in fact, he is a graduate of the very same high school that both of my kids attended and graduated from. He graduated from Chenango Valley High School in 1985. My son graduated in 1999, and my daughter in 2001. While we don't know him, this fills me with pride!
Commander Jones
God Speed, Commander!
