Anybody who somehow doubts that there are some real, death-dealing lunatics involved in the debate about health care (i.e. wanting to shuffle Grandma off to the grave before she's due), should see this lunatic column from the New York Times today. The author is Ross Douthat.

My bad. The column I linked to is authored by novelist Richard Dooling. However, NY Times columnist Ross Douthat, who formerly wrote for National Review, has a similar column today marked "Telling Grandma No."

Yes, there really are people out there who think it would serve society well if we withheld treatment from elderly people, and in other cases, the disabled, etc. It's a slippery slope. I've seen it in action.

I know what you're saying Christina - it a VERY slippery slope when/if "we" can decide when "it's time" for someone else. As I've posted, I had two ex-step children that are badly handicapped. One passed away last August, at 51 after many years of "care". The other, Janet, just turned 42, and has been in a nursing home since she was 26. Both have been bed-ridden for years, and have (had) feeding tubes in their stomachs. I'm sure there are folks that would consider them "unproductive citizens" and wouldn't have a problem "letting them/her" go, ... Under a "cost analysis review" they'd definitely both be viewed as a liability, ... and that's the road some want to take us down.

What I find humorous in all of this, is that if no 'Death Panel' (so-to-speak) existed in the legislation (it did, Sec.1233 of the bill and the $1 Billion allocated to 'Comparitive Effectiveness Research', which would evaluate the relative 'merits' of various treatments), then how did they 'remove' it? The same people of questionable intellect (and dubious judgement) who believed that such a review board didn't exist in the legislation, also believe that the 'Public Option' plan was to be self-sustaining, that the Stimulus Law prevented unemployment from exceeding 8%, and that there is such a thing as a 'Jobless Recovery' as well!

...As I said before, folks like that are the reason why I am in favor of a Poll Tax and Literacy Test for voters.

And Sarah Palin is ridiculed for calling these "reviews" what they are. Sure brought attention to it! Ingenious!

Sarge, I too am tickled over the Senate's intention to remove what never existed. Is this a sit-com?
