As each day passes, I'm becoming more and more concerned about this nation. The 24/7 barrage of news regarding Michael Jackson's death and the relative dearth of information regarding what is contained in House Bill 2454 is evidence of more "bread and circus". I'm reminded of the tale that Nero fiddled while Rome burned. This country is being destroyed - rather quickly, and the news media is so involved in it's destruction they will not focus on the truth. We know what their opinions are, we need to know the facts, thank you. We are obviously being fed junk food, when what we really need is a healthy diet of solid information on important matters, not what the media thinks we want to hear. By this point in time, everyone in the world knows that Michael Jackson died. How many people in this country know what is in HR 2450? How many congressmen who voted for this outrageous bill knows what's in it? Other than voting these people out in the mid-term elections,(easier said than done) what can we do???? I'm mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!!! Fellow Mohicanlanders, what say you?

I'd say you covered the bases very well. I'm afraid that most Americans these days are just fine with almost anything unfortunately. Just as long as they have a few credit cards, a working car, a c-phone, a house/condo, - that kind of stuff in general, and nothing else excites them/us very much. ... I had intended to e-mail my congressman (Hodes) about HR 2450 - instead I'm going to call his office tomorrow instead, - the sob has disabled his e-mail. ... It does make you wonder what it will take to wake up this country, - then there's always that chance it's too late, simply NOT going to happen. It kinda reminds me of the frog and boiling water - just a little at a time, and no one even notices. . BTW, - speaking of that pedophile, how long will it be until someone spots him in a store in Utah??? |

Di-mc, I share your pain! I commented on this on the "Here it Comes" thread. I never cared about politics before now and my poor family is so tired of me talking about this. I think we could use a Happy Hour!
As I said in the other thread, I can't understand why all of this is allowed to happen so fast without the people assigned to represent us having the time to read and understand what they are voting on.
My understanding is that Spain and Australia are ahead of us on this and it's not working too well there for them. I'm on a Literature forum and communicate with someone from Australia on a regular basis and she is living it right now. It seems Obama can get anything passed because of the Democratic majority and the helplessness that many of us feel is the contributing to the anger and anxiety. Hopefully, 2010 will bring some change before it will be too late. I do think people will come to their senses with these elections.
You are not alone-there are a lot of people who feel as you/we do. And the media, I agree, doesn't help to inform people. Journalism is dead I heard somewhere and that seems to be the case. |

I share your frustration, di-mc, though I'm coming at the issue from the opposite end of the political spectrum. I was on the Internet Friday evening and complaining to my husband that the lead story on the Washington Post website -- the Washington Post! -- was about Michael Jackson, when I was trying to find info on the House vote on cap-and-trade. He said simply, "More people care about Michael Jackson than care about cap-and-trade."
I think he's right, as is Monadnock Guide. Information is out there for anyone who cares to find it. My husband and I subscribe to three daily papers: the NY Times (national), the Harrisburg Patriot-News (state, more or less), and the Carlisle Sentinel (very local). On Saturday the House's passage of the cap-and-trade bill was the lead story in the NYT, the lead story in the P-N's world section on page 6, and not mentioned in the Sentinel. I've since read about it on numerous Internet sites, and it will undoubtedly be covered in the upcoming issue of Newsweek. As I see it, the problem is a lack of interest on the public's part, not a lack of coverage by news sources.
And if Michael Jackson hadn't died, it would have been something else -- American Idol, a reality show, a marital breakup between stars of a reality show -- any story that grabs human interest and is easy to understand. |

Bookworm, You are right in saying that the info is out there for anyone interested in finding it - that's the problem, most people aren't interested in finding it. They might catch the evening news - ABC,NBC,CBS, CNN(all pure rubbish IMO), a headline in a newspaper they see someone else reading, and programs like David Letterman's. Obviously, there's not a whole lot of accurate info being disseminated and/or absorbed. So, we all know that Michael Jackson died, Farah Fawcett died and now Billy Mays, how many Americans even know whether their congressman voted yes, or no in HR 2454, Cap & Trade? How many even know their congressman's name? I'm depressed. Leah, I'm ready for that Happy Hour! |

Well Lady-Di, saying that the media is "involved", may be a bit of an understatement. They are more correctly co-conspiritors; since they helped to build, market and deliver the latest agent of our downfall last November.

I too share not only your frustration, but also a sincere disappointment in 52% of my fellow voting citizens. As for what else we can do besides voting, would be to also make sure that you are prepared to look after your own in the event of a 'Perfect Storm' scenario...

Quite right MG, for as long as the 'Plebes & Proles' have their mundane comforts and entertainments (provided for and/or subsidized from, the public purse, if they are too lazy and/or incompentent to aquire such things through hard work themselves), they will not trouble themselves with anything complex like 'liberty', 'self-reliance', 'accountability', 'industry', or other such Right-Wing nonsense...

Leah, just like the proverbial 'thief in the night', the DNC must work faster than a street-corner Three-card Monte con-artist, in order to get this passed before anyone notices... That being anyone who is going to be actually paying for their scams. The 'Zero-Liability Voter' (a voter who does not actually pay income taxes, but instead recieves all of what was witheld from their paycheck, and sometimes an additional 'earned' income credit as well) will not be concerned with the debt or damage of the Left's agenda, since they are not the stakeholders of our society, but rank with the leeches.

Sarge-that picture could be the cover of a catalog for camouflage clothing and other "protection accessories". (have to laugh to keep from crying). But, I agree with your reason for the speed at which these bills are being passed.
Di-I am enjoying a glass of my favorite wine and am toasting to you!
bookworm-I agree that most people would rather read the 'easy' news and would rely on their representatives in D.C. to watch out for their best interests. This Cap and Trade bill is not easy to understand for most people. Things are moving so fast, however, that before people realize what hit them, it will be too late, I'm afraid. |

Hey, many of the little marxist 'Brown-Shirts' out there are probably wishing and waiting for their orders to pounce from 'Truth Squad H.Q.'; and if they ever do, then they will soon find out the hard way that this 'sheep' is in fact a 'ram', and in full Autumn rut

What a wonderful poster the first one would make for my son's dormitory room this fall! (Not that he would agree to put it up). That's my favorite, but they're all funny.
And, MG, I'm sure gun sales have never been better! |

| Yes indeed Leah, gun sales are completely off the wall. Not only that, you almost can't buy any decent ammunition these days, - the manufacturers can't keep up with the demand. I've been waiting for some "target grade" .22 cal from Federal for about 6-7 weeks so far, - and they can't give a delivery date. |

Yep, ammo is getting as scarce as hens' teeth, especially center fire.
The good part is, the metric system is finally getting notice, thanks to the popularity of the 9mm. |

And that is about as close to free-market capitalism, as Obama will ever venture (and about as close as he will ever get to holding onto a real private-sector job as well)

Gentlemen, I knew that these shortages were coming, and that is why I stocked up on both my practice, and tactical ammunition supplies after the Democrat's 2006 congressional victories.

You are entitled to your opinion, and are free to express it; and for that, you should be thankful of those of us on the Right. Remember that your 'freedoms' and 'rights' only exist because of us who are "hardcore types" and "testosterone-laden", and willing to risk it all, so as to preserve a free society for all citizens. In the end, it is the soldier, the policeman, and the armed citizen, who truly protect your right to ridicule any or all of them.
For all the clever legal briefs, trendy legislation and court decisions mean nothing without the force of lawful people, who are willing to validate what are no more than words and paper. Brown, Mapp, Miranda, et.al. would be nothing more than hot air and fire kindling without the man holding a gun, lawfully enforcing them. When President Eisenhower told a young black woman (Melba Beals) that he would protect her from abuse during her attendence at a previously all-white school, he didn't send lawyers, judges, journalists, college professors, Hollywood-types, student protestors, and/or 'community activists' to Little Rock. He sent the 101st Airborne Division and the FBI...
quote: Bookworm then followed with: This little marxist Brown-Shirt (or whatever it is I am this week) thinks you've finally "jumped the shark."
Just remember BW, that even with all of our faults, those of you on the Left could not exist without us on the Right protecting you, and funding your beliefs (through our tax dollars). On the other hand, the folks on the Right could very easily exist (and most likely prosper beyond previously known levels) without the people on the Left. In other words, "You need us, but we don't need you"; and this is because as Conservatives, we believe that liberty is the solution to the human condition, and not some government program paid for by confiscated tax dollars.
