Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops, and leaves you to face the fall alone.
~~~A. Bartlett Giamatti The Green Fields of the Mind (1977)
It also breaks your heart with ticket prices and high priced players.
How true, Secureman. I dare say that it was the average family man that once supported the game and probably helped in bringing it to the fame it now enjoys....and today the average family man cannot afford to take his family to the game.
Hi Guys, Just a note to let you know that baseball is alive and well in California. The World Series was one of the best and I actually rooted for an American League team. (first time in my life). My daughter, Susan, and her husband went to a play-off game and a final series game. I know, I know, only the young and without kids can afford that luxury. However, I have to tell you I enjoyed every minute of each game from home watching the ole tv. We had a better view than those pesky kids of mine who did pay an arm and a leg to go. Hurrah for the Angels!!!!!!!!! It was one fantastic series.
Hellooooo, Ellen. Long time, no see! I was hoping the Angels would win. We went to see the Braves play two summers ago. Actually the ticket prices weren't as steep as the beer and pizza! Good to hear from you again. How've you been?
Ah, for the Boys of Summer ...
Yeah, though the salaries are ridiculous, and many of the players are spoiled brats [as in ALL professional sports], the game remains the same, and I LOVE IT!!! I simply block out all the peripheral stuff, and just enjoy the baseball.
Granted, being a Dodgers fan, there's not been much to enjoy, of late ... like since 1988 and that memorable Kirk Gibson homerun & the defeat of the Bash Brothers & the Mighty A's in the World Series!
I grew up with the Yankees, and played ball all summer ... that's all I did! Collected baseball cards, played Strat-o-matic, played in Little League & pick up games, and watched the Yankees, on WPIX-TV, channel 11, in NYC!
Bobby Richardson - 2B Tony Kubek - SS Roger Maris - RF Mickey Mantle - CF Yogi Berra - LF Moose Skowron - 1B Elston Howard - C Clete Boyer - 3B Whitey Ford - P
Like yesterday ... thanks for the memories, Theresa! Sometimes, I wish I were a little kid again ...
PS - I, too, rooted for the Angels ... mainly 'cause I HATE THE GIANTS!
When it comes to baseball in its purest form, you can't beat it. Glad I brought back some fond memories for you, Rich. I never played Little League but both my children did and believe me those were some of the best times. And, of course, as you know our daughter went on the play college softball...we miss that, too. (Come on April!)
