Poll Question:
Ok folks here it is! Here is the proposed itinerary for the upcoming Mohican Gathering. Look it over, then please answer the poll question at the bottom. This is all a rough draft at this point and minor changes could occur, including price adjustments based on meal decisions:
Thursday, June 19 Chimney Rock Park- A Gathering favorite! Here we will hike to the cliffs and see where the dramatic final scenes of the movie were filmed, including the fight scene between Magua and Uncas and also Hickory Nut Falls. A hikers lunch will be provided. Breakfast has not been decided yet... your feedback is welcome on this option. Cost: $ 20-$26 per person, depending on meals
Manor Inn- *****NEW***** We will visit the Manor Inn in Asheville and see where Webb's Headquarters scene was filmed. Eric Hurley (aka Soldier #2), who was there during the filming, will be on hand to provide information. No charge.
Friday, June 20 Linville Gorge/Table Rock/Lake James Those of you who have attended Gatherings before will be familiar with this format, there is no change this year. We will visit Table Rock, where the last scene in the movie was filmed, and Linville Falls and Lake James. Soldier #2 will be with us again to provide insights into the film locations. No charge except for meals, once again we plan to have breakfast and lunch at Louise's Famous Rock House Restaurant.
Saturday, June 21 Dupont State Forest We will hike to some of the area's most beautiful waterfalls, which you will recognize from the movie. Limited transportation to certain waterfalls may be available for those who need assistance. No charge except for you are responsible for packing your own lunch.
Afternoon/Evening... we will rush over to Asheville for a tour of Blue Ridge Motion Picture Studio. The folks at this studio were heavily involved in the filming of LOTM, and will tell you which scene was actually shot inside the studio! We will have a quick sub sandwich dinner then they will open their viewing room for us to watch LOTM on the big screen. Cost: approx. $25 which includes tour, dinner, and movie (and possibly popcorn, I need to verify that)
Sunday June 22 AM: Elk Hunt/Pisgah National Forest We will carpool to the Pisgah National Forest to see where the Elk Hunt segment was filmed, and also part of Tracking the War Party. No charge. Afternoon: French Broad Rifle Park--Once again the French Broad Rifles are our hosts for an afternoon of food and fun. Eric Hurley will be in charge of Mohican Games. There will be a BBQ lunch. Mike Conley, a reporter for the McDowell News, will be on hand to share his collection of articles that appeared in local newspapers during the filming. The French Broad folks will be with us to share their knowledge of period weaponry and might even let you try out a musket. Oh, and Raffles and the Auction, too! Cost: $20 includes BBQ lunch
Ok, so add up the costs and this looks like one of the least expensive Gatherings in a long time, at less than $75 per person if you attend everything. So, my question for the poll is this: Would any of you be interested in adding Biltmore Estate on Wednesday, June 18? There we would have a guide show us where several scenes from the movie were filmed, then have lunch at Deerpark Restaurant on the Estate, then have the afternoon for self-guided tours of the Biltmore House and Winery. I don't have an exact cost, but I know it will be at least $60 per person, possibly more. We would need at least 20 participants in order to get this group rate. So, how about it? Anyone up for the Biltmore, or do you want to stick with the Thursday thru Sunday scenario? Please let me know as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that the prices I have shown you only include meals where noted. Otherwise, meals are on your own. You are also responsible for transportation to and from the venues and your lodging. We are currently looking for a group rate and will announce lodging suggestions soon.

A far stretch, but are there any discounts/free for any proposed or scheduled events for wee ones under the age of 8? I have a 7,5 and 4 pint.
I ask because IF we were able to make it, we're traveling from AZ and of course cost is a factor. Would love to make it this year though. Jeff and I think of all of you guys often! |

Caitlin, Wow it would be great if you could join us! I know Chimney Rock and Biltmore Estate both have youth rates, I would just need to get those from them and let you know. I could certainly work something out for the movie and studio tour. I will contact CRP & BE early next week to find out the youth rates. Steph |

As it turns out, both Biltmore and Chimney Rock Park have great deals for youth admissions withour group. Caitlin, check your private message for details. If anyone else needs youth rate info, please contact me privately for the prices. Anyone else care to comment or vote about Biltmore? We'll need 20 to secure the group rate! |

I have a question, Stephanie. I don't really want to see Biltmore so would I be free to do whatever that day? |

Light, I can answer that question for you. The answer is YES!!! If there are any activities that you don't want to do, then feel free to go do something on your own. I will be doing this on the Table Rock day. I just can't seem to get up early enough to make it to this event. My son wouldn't miss it for the world. He says that going to Table Rock is the best part of the whole trip, but while some of the more active Gatherers are hiking up that mountain, I will be snoozing away in my hotel bed.

Thanks, Kay, for answering! You can do whatever you want on any day you want, you are not obligated to do anything. In fact, since Biltmore will be done on Weds. and is our first event, you could wait an extra day to come here and save a bit on the hotel. Or, if there was something else in the area you wanted to do, by all means, go for it!
Ok, many of you longtime Gatherers will remember John Harkins from Ga. who has been at most Gatherings but was unable to join us in 2006 due to an injury. I spoke with him on the phone last night and he is looking forward to joining us again in June. John does not have the internet, but he wants to attend Biltmore so I will use my vote for him since I am neutral. It looks, based on what I've seen here and the personal conversations I've had, that we will have enough to do Biltmore, so I will add it for certain to the itinerary. Complete, final schedule and registration info coming soon!!!! |

Hi, Michelle! And welcome to the board, we'd love for you to join us in the mountains!
I believe the nearest airport is Asheville, NC (AVL), you may have to connect through Atlanta, GA (ATL) though to get there. |
