well.............after last years Terror in the Skies of Gods Canvas of Love and Peace.....i did NTt answer my door for Trick or Treaters.....i was afraid that there was gonna be some sick people putting things in the kids bags that i thought that it was not @ all right to celebrate a holiday with lost lil meaning........its a new World and i think this NON - SENSICAL holiday of a celebration of candy eating and PARTYING N Playin DRESS UP for kids n ADULTS alike, IS ALL OVER......................yr thoughts?? even though i love to decorate with goblins n door thangs .i think its a past thing......anth

I agree. it is fun for the kids though but I think it is getting way too big compared to some celebrations that should be more improtant, like Easter!

For some of us out there, Halloween...Samhain...is the most important holiday of the year, and I'm talking bigger than Christmas or Easter. It is the time when we connect with and honor those who have gone before us...sounds like it out to be gloomy, but it isn't. We find joy in the fact that our departed friends and relatives have never really left us. They comfort and watch over us and are there when we are in our most desperate hours. Halloween has, unfortunately, been commercialized much as Christmas and Easter have been and has consequently lost much of its original meaning. In our household Halloween has always been a time of celebration and joy...and a time when the family, all of us, living and dead, come together and remember all the events that truly make us a family.

Lady Ann, I'm glad to hear you put Halloween (Samhain) in such importance too! I've done a lot of study of Celtic history and religions and learned about the importance of this holiday, ancestors, "veil between the worlds", etc. and its' only added glee and importance to my celebration of my already fave holiday, Halloween!

Red, my ancestors are both Celtic and Nordic...and I am married to a MacLeod! The Celtic traditions are deeply ingrained in my family and have been for generations...even during the brief "Roman Catholic years", which lasted two generations! We have always celebrated Samhain with vigor...including the parties, the dressing up, the trick or treating. But our most revered tradition occurs between 11:30 p.m. October 31st and 12:30 a.m. November 1st, when the whole family welcomes back the ancestors...we sit down and enjoy their favorites foods (my grandmother's fried chicken and biscuits and my son's waffles always make an appearance at that meal!)and talk about the memories we share. Very Celtic! And I think, a very GOOD tradition.
A very Happy Samhain to you and yours!

well I learned something Today 'Lady Ann'.I stand Educated and a BIT ..corrected, BUT, I was refferring to The American Holiday & what has become a Devil-Like ,candy eating & an adultDRESS UP Partying silly tradition... Void and Lacking in real Substance like yr Holiday sounds....Respect to you...and i wish you all the best that eve.. .BUT I was meaning all this COMMERCIAL Witches, loved Dark Shadows in the 60's though! I too abhor the emphasis people have come to place on violence and gore as part of the "Halloween tradition". Living as I do in "Theme Park World" (make that Orlando, Florida) we are bombarded with ads and billboards for Universal's "Halloween Horror Nights" and "Fright Nights" at Busch Gardens...both of which feature killing, maiming, murdering and other such events portrayed in realistic detail by actors...designed to shock and horrify. It really disturbs me to think that people think this type of "entertainment" is fun. This was never what Halloween (really "All Hallows Evening") was meant to be...it is what Hollywood and commercialism has let it become. And unfortunately this has also led to the holiday being connected in the minds of some with "Satanism" and devil worship. Nothing could be farther from the true origins of the day.

Hey Anth,Your a city boy.... remember getting blasted with eggs and shaving cream? The roving gangs at night...running for your life when they spotted you down the side street.Going back to the fort and getting your boys.....loading up with ammo,like:more eggs,shaving cream,and crushed chalk inside of a sock to whack someone with!We even had fire extinguishers to spray.Also getting chased by the cops......remember the old black and green cop cars in 69,70? Usually the cops were too fat to chase us and they could not fit their big butts through the hole in the fence where we made our getaway into the lots and vanish out of sight.Ah,the good ole days of Halloween.What devil? We were it.

Too funny, Jimbo ... sounds like I lived in your neighborhood!! I have the exact same remembrances!!! My last "escapade" involved a kerosene fire set to block the street from the invading hordes of Elmont. I remember being in the shower, late that night, blood oozing from my nose, eggs dripping from my hair ... no more for me ...

We used to play an album in order to gear us up for the gang fights on Halloween.Anyone ever hear of the group MC5? They had an album called,"Kick Out The Jams Mother F#%$&*".Not a nice album for thirteen year olds to listen too.Very vulgar and trashy.But who could tell us anything? We knew it all and thought we were the coolest things on the face of the earth until we were covered with eggs-then we cried.Ah,the good ole years,'68,'69,'70.

I REMEMBER Ya GUYS........i was in Franklin Sqaure/Elmont Bored territtorry by meacham ave and Franklin Ave by Poppy's and The ole Carroll's Burgeres/Car wash/Bowling alley/Valley Farms deli area.with all my eggs.....and YES i was in a lil Harmless Street gang in Summer 1969 and 1970 in the 7th grade n 8th @ 13 n 14.called.*THE DEVILS DECIPLES*..............Lord!................as Mary Hopkins sang THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND.I THOUGHT THEY"D NEVER END.........we'd sing n Dance Forever and as DAY...we Lived the LIfe we chose.we'd FIGHT n NEVER Lose...those were the days.....OH! I think that I am growing out of Haloween... It had been 3 years since I went tricker triting. But in these years the only thing that gets me ready for Hawoleen is carving the pumpkins, I guess I have to start telling my self that I am getting to old to tricker treat. Anthony, Yeah I really liked how you said the things you wrote up there I really try to have all the fun in highschool that I can because everyone I talk to is like highschool was the best years of my life so I am trying to take highschool for granted, Also sometimes learning isnt my thing but I do try to learn alot of things in school. NOW about the candy situation, I think that someday I will stop eating candy but when my mom brings bags of candy home for Hawoleen the whole process of eating candy starts all over again, so maybe someday I might give it up, Well thanks for all the the wonderful information, I will keep in mind what you had said. Hey Anth,Now yer talking music when you mention Leslie West and Mountain.I always thought Rich looked like the bass player Felix Papparlardi.I remember when my older brother brought home their first album in 1969.I still have the songs.... Long Red,Dreams of milk and Honey,Blood of the sun,man they were great right in the height of my city bad ass years.West side story-Now there's a movie with influence.When I first saw it in 1963,I wanted a switchblade knife so bad.I got in trouble for writing Jets all over the corner stop sign on my block.When I could'nt get a switchblade,I settled for the ice cream stick when I got done with the ice cream and we jumped all around making believe we were in a knife fight.Influence! I was a Jet from my first cigarette till I coughed my brains out! No more butts and no more knife fights with ice cream sticks!

You know how I said in my message that I am gonna try as hard as I can to have fun in Highschool, well today everybody at school was just like well the only way that you can really have fun in highschool is if you try new things which ment trying drugs and trying alchole, So i asked one of my peers how they had fun in highschool and guess what he said. . . . . . doing drugs and alchole, now is it me or is that now days the only way peopl have fun in highschool Mohicanwarrior
