Poll Question:
Ok we need to start discussing which events you would like to participate in for Gathering 08. So many to pick from, and we really can't do them all. The way I see it, we have some core events that will always be part of the Gathering and are non-negotiable. These events are:
Chimney Rock Park (most of final scenes of the movie) Dupont State Forest (waterfalls scenes) Linville Gorge (opening vistas, Linville falls, Table Rock ending) The Movie (venue for 08 yet to be determined) some sort of cookout or covered dish finale// raffles and prizes
That leaves several optional events to choose from. Please vote for which event you would MOST like to see included in our itinerary. I have indicated $ where applicable. Vote for only one, but feel free to discuss the others---or your own suggestons--- below.

Well, for a 4-day Gathering the core events are going to eat up a lot of time. What ever else we do needs to be within easy access of them. What about the FBR? It seems like we did a little less each time. 2002 we shot 25 and 50 yards (didn't have time for 100 yds), then in 2004 we shot some targets, then in 2006 we just sort of fooled around. Is interest in that declining?
Also, last time some folks came to Linville in period dress with their rifles (no ammo, of course) and it being a NPS site, they were not allowed to carry them. Knowing the NPS, I don't see this changing. If you want to contact the head Ranger on this, OK, if not we should make it clear ahead of time. As I understand it, whether or not you are allowed to carry an unloaded flintlock rifle with no flint in the cock is purely up to the whims of the site's Head Ranger. As personnel changes, rules change. |

Have to agree...the core events do look like they'll keep us busy but I'd still like to squeeze in Pisgah Ntn'l Forest. Much like Dustbunny I love nature - can never get enough of it. Especially if it was filmed in LOTM.

The Pisgah National Forest option is a neat choice because we didn't go there in 06. Same for Biltmore. So even if you attended last year's Gathering, I'm hoping to shake it up a little and not have the exact same itinerary. |

I voted for Blue Ridge studios because it's relatively inexpensive and (at least partly) indoors. It would be a good event for people who don't necessarily want to visit all the outdoor venues in the NC summer heat. Plus, there's a screening room that can be fitted with up to 70 seats, as I'm sure most veteran gatherers already know (sorry, I'm a newbie!): http://blueridgemotionpictures.com/screeningroom.htm. Perfect place to watch the movie?
(Actually my first choice would've been Biltmore---complete w/ wine tasting and shopping! ---but I understand it's pricey and we want to keep expenses as low as possible.) |

Red, I voted for the movie studio too. I didn't get to go last year because of the timing. I had to go and meet my friend that was coming to Asheville, and we thought that we could make it, but we got there so late, we decided to just go back to the hotel. Everybody that went really enjoyed it, so I was really hoping to go next year. I didn't know that they had a screening room. That would be wonderful if we could see the movie there.

Thanks for your input, Sunshine. Cherokee was included as part of the Gathering I think in 2004 and for some reason I didn't put it on the poll. In 2006 a few of us got together the night before the Gathering started and went to see "Unto These Hills" in Cherokee. Even if Cherokee doesn't make it onto the official Gathering itinerary, you could always plan a little side trip like that. I'm sure there would be other Gatherers interested in that as well. |

Consider one side trip planned Stephanie. I remember finding my way to a waterfall on the reservation. It was a 1/4 of a mile and seem to be pretty much straight up. Gotta love stairs.
Anyway once me and my friend michelle made it back down and were walking to our car. We got in conversation with 2 guys. Dont remember what we said but suddenly one of the guys says in disbelief 'what are you from VA'. Just than his buddy points to the plates on the rental. You guessed it VA plates. It was to funny. |

I voted for the wilderness. Would also love to do Biltmore, but need to know a price before hand. |

I voted for "other" and in particular was targeting both the Cameron Cabin and the Huron village. We might of course have to go in camouflage and under cover of night for the latter. Stephanie will discreetly be taking down names for this clandestine tour behind the tour. |

Hey Vincent! I just now saw this! Hope you are doing well. The only problem with visiting the Huron Village is that tradition dictates that we sacrifice one Gatherer over a raging fire... any volunteers? |

FYI there is a nice one page article on Chimney Rock Park in the September issue of Southern Living magazine. There is also a nice section on the Smokie Mountains.
I still dont get why people would have to be convinced to visit the area. I have been there 4 times and loved. |

I think I go at least that many times a year, every year!
But I will agree, if they've been there no convincing needed!

I was in Asheville yesterday evening for a meeting and I wound up being a little early, so I rode by SOTR just to see what was happening with it. There was an "open" sign and some cars out front. Looked just like it always did. I had heard that it might be sold. |
