"I want them to see what they have done to Jack."
Jacqueline Kennedy, November 22, 1963
She said these words as she steadfastly refused repeated requests that she change out of the pink suit that was covered with the blood of her husband.

I remember so vividly where I was when I heard the news. I can still see my sixth grade teacher standing in the doorway of the room after she had been called to the office to hear the news. She stood there watching her sixth graders acting like typical sixth grades when their teacher was out of the room. Slowly, one by one, we began to quieten down as we could see she was upset. Then she said,"Our President has been shot." She left again and not a word was spoken from any of her students. In a few minutes she came back and told us he had died.
Later that year, during spring break I went to Washington, D.C. with the Girl Scouts and we visited Arlington and saw his grave. I will never forget that day as long as I live. |

Yes, Theresa, it was a horrible day. For me, it put a black mark on my otherwise joyful and fun senior year of high school. That event made its way into our senior class talent show and into our Yearbook... never to be forgotten. And I will never forget the sound of our principal's voice breaking as he made the announcement over the p.a. that the President had died.
It doesn't matter whether or not we liked the man as a person, whether or not we approved of the man and his policies, whether or not we are sick and tired of hearing all of the theories... he was our President. His assassination drew us together as a nation, as did Lincoln's, and as did 9/11/01. And that is what can never be forgotten.
BTW, have you ever wondered what happened to the blood-stained pink suit? Well, it is in storage at the Smithsonian. The story is that the suit arrived at the museum, packed in a cardboard box, shortly after the assassination. No one knows who sent it. It was not the Kennedy family. It has never been cleaned.
Just recently, Caroline Kennedy gave a deed of gift for her mother's suit to the museum, with the stipulation that it can not be put on display until 2063... one hundred years after that day.
And so it waits... neatly wrapped and packed in tissue paper, in a box, on a shelf... until that anniversary. |

Like Theresa, I was in the 6th grade. A mere whippersnapper. Yet, the tragedy of the event was not lost on me or our contemporaries. The magnitude of the death of our President chilled most all of us to the bone.
I was home from school, sick, and watching something or other on the b&w TV in the den. In those days, "news alerts" really were "breaking news."
Can it really be 40 years? |

I just visited the place where President Kennedy was shot last month for the first time. It was SO recognizable!!! The whole area has been turned into a nice memorial to JFK. The Book Repository looks just as it did 40 years ago as does the grassy knoll. Another very moving area to visit in our country! I believe I was five and I have a vivid memory of that day.
