On the eve of just 9 months to go:
One thing about putting these Gatherings together ... you can expect the wheels to come off once or twice before all is said & done. Sometimes, it's even a broken axle. That's why it pays to have plenty of spare parts on hand!
With everything going so well, so early, it was bound to happen. Without further ado, Gathering VI, day-by-day, as it stands up to the minute:
DAY ONE: Pretty much all set. The only thing up-in-the-air is who will make a presentation under the pavilion at CRP. Cherie mentioned someone. And John Evans, with his outstanding props collection, is currently slated. He is on the list of folks planning on attending.
DAY TWO: In stone. [This'd be Linville Gorge] Just have to let Louise's know to expect us, but we'll hold off on that till early Spring, or so.
DAY THREE: Here's where a wheel falls off. Biltmore is all set, just holding off on the contract till after the payment portion of sign-ups is underway so that we can make the deposit. Dinner, at Spirits on the River, too, is a go ... working on getting an updated menu as we speak to post on the site. We will work this in a similar fashion as we did last time ... you will place your order in advance, via the sign-up process beginning in January, but pay at the restaurant in June. BUMP IN THE ROAD: Bill Miller appears disinterested in appearing this year. We [more properly, Ann C.] have pursued other avenues ... Dougie MacLean among them ... too expensive, though interested. It was getting to the point where we were going to abandon the idea of music there, unless something dropped in our lap. Something dropped in our lap.
Iroquois performer Joanne Shenandoah at the Hunter Mountain Pow Wow in New York's Catskill Mountains, circa 1986
Saw her a couple of times back then. Excellent. This is not definite, but is being worked on from various angles. Bill Miller still not 100% ruled out.
DAY FOUR: In stone. [This'd be the Nolichucky]
DAY FIVE: Too early to actually book the Cherokee-related events, but they are aware and this is a go. This is also the day Russell Means is scheduled to join us. BROKEN WHEEL 2: COINS FOR CHINGACHGOOK is in need of some serious help! Before the 6-month mark, we need to wrap this up. Please help ... This is bordering on urgent!
DAY SIX: In stone! Tim Cordell still on track to do his presentation at Triple Falls. The only small factor still being worked on is whether we can transfer the theatrical version to DVD. This would save us lots of money. Someone is working on this, but so far, results have not been too good.
DAY SEVEN: In stone! [This'd be the Mohican Games] As reported, Wes Studi is donating to Ariel's Auction; Eric Schweig has been approached, but no word as of yet. H. David Wright is definitely contributing a print for the general raffle.
To Contribute Ideas or Items: Ariel's Auction: Jayne || General Raffle: Cherie
SUNDRY: Went from the possibility of a full company or two camping out, to a mini-encampment, to ... . This remains unsettled. I believe we have free camping space OKed out back at the Geneva. Boys? Contact Gadget Girl
Program Guide still in its annual state of, "What program guide?" - courtesy of one intrepid Jo! Right on schedule would be my guess!
Hoping on T-Shirt design ready in time for the January sign-ups, courtesy of Eric & Sharon.

It's all sounding great, Rich! Sorry about Bill Miller but Joanne Shenandoah sounds like a good option. Many thanks to those who have already responded with donations and suggestions re Ariel's Cabin. Wes and Carter, Kay, Ros, Karen, Christina (also known as the Red-Haired Lass), and the English Trader (I knew you'd come through with Ping and Lemon Shrub, ET!) . Lots of good ideas! So...we're off to a good start!
I hear from Ariel's parents that she's in kindergarten now (Yikes!) and involved in some other activities to help her socially and therapeutically. She still faces surgeries - she had some complications in the spring with eye surgery, so will be dealing with more of that soon. Will keep you posted as I hear.
Have a great weekend, everybody! Jayne |
