Looks like the eastern coast is in the path of this strong hurricane. Take care Mohicanlanders, and anyone else that might be along the coast.

Hi, Theresa,

Folks should definitely take this storm seriously & I am very concerned about where it may go & the damage it could cause. The last hurricane to deal a direct blow to this area (Norfolk, VA and on down through Nags Head & the rest of the Outer Banks of NC) occurred 'way back in 1933, when my mother was about 12 years old. Parts of downtown Norfolk had flood waters up past second story windows & there are some old pics around that show the Norfolk police navigating the area in rowboats as they attempted to assist stranded residents. The five-lane bypass down on the Outer Banks hadn't even been thought of back then & the only road down there was NC 12, a two-lane blacktop now referred to by locals as "the beach road." My mother told me that most of that road had standing water at least waist deep. Damage from this storm was significant and it wasn't nearly as powerful as Isabel.

Since that time, this entire area of the east coast has had several "close calls" with hurricanes & it seems as though something always happened at the last minute to cause these storms to take a turn away from us, sparing us from a direct hit. As a result, this has led to a level of complacancy among a lot of folks around here. Everyone would do well to remember the two hurricanes that dealt us back-to-back passing blows a couple of years ago. One of these was Hurricane Floyd and one of the towns hardest hit was Franklin, which is about an hour west of here. The whole downtown had major flood damage & it seemed as if the water would never go back down.

My younger sister & her husband live down in Buxton, NC on Hatteras Island, a little over one mile from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. If this storm follows what is presently the most likely path, it would come ashore right there at Hatteras Island & then proceed right on up the coast to where I live. My sister & her husband have already formed an evacuation plan & I'm just hoping & praying for some kind of divine intervention that will cause Isabel to take a strong turn to the north over the next couple of days, which would keep it well off-shore as it passes by.

On a lighter note, I hope that all is well with you & Claude. How are Scout and the other members of your animal family doing? Y'all take care & we'll keep in touch!

You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be watchin' this 'un!!

Forecasts have it hitting the Cape Lookout to Cape Hatteras (or possibly more north if it turns - but thanks to a high pressure area it isn't likely to) area as early as next Wednesday evening. I live one hour inland from Hatteras, but will be in Winston-Salem for the week - that is...only if the storm misses our area. If not, I'll have to head home to secure items (like trampolines and outdoor furniture and plants...) AND to be with my daughter who will still be here in G-Vegas (that's what the college students call Greenville). While we don't usually get storm surge water and winds, we still get a great deal of tree and line damage - not to mention FLOODING - We were one of the counties hardest hit by Floyd (of course being hit by Dennis TWICE the week before aided the damage) - I couldn't get to work for TWO WEEKS because I lived north of the river and the university is south. Our river flood stage is 13 feet - after Floyd it crested at 33 feet. Diane, I can remember quite vividly law enforcement, emergency management and National Guard riding around neighborhoods in boats to rescue people AND animals. It was AMAZING how many folks fled and left animals tied to trees and such - just heartbreaking - most of them just didn't think and they were being evacuated hastily. I remember watching whole small trees scooting down the rode just like a car - FREAKY!

They have also forecast it to decrease in intensity - THANK GOODNESS - to 115 mph or so by the time it makes landfall. AND THANK GOD they got the lighthouse moved inland - if this storm hits Buxton and the light hadn't been moved, it might have been the end of the tallest lighthouse in America. Just hope it can withstand the wind now having been moved! And Diane, the road down the Outer Banks IS STILL NC 12 - two lane little road from Nags Head to Hatteras Village. The BIG ROADS dump you just at the beaches - that at least should make evacuations easier!! A large section of that road had to be rebuilt just before Rodanthe (where Cecelia has a home! YIKES!) after Floyd. I suspect they will be talking evacuation of Ocracoke and the other islands SOON!!!

SOOOOOOOOO, I suppose I'll be a Weather Channel junkie instead of a Food Network-aholic for a time!!!!!

This storm has already remained a Category 5 storm longer than any other - surely it will diminish soon!!

GG - gotta go fill jugs and stock up on charcoal and batteries!!!

Hey Diane!

All is quite well with Claude and myownself, thanks for asking. Scout has turned into a HORSE! He's beautiful and we enjoy him so much. He's up to about 65 or 70 pounds and is 9 1/2 months old. The other pets are well as well.

You guys and all others in the path of this storm please heed the warnings and take care.

Everybody in the path of the storm, please stay safe!!! If you have to move further inland, then it is alot better to do that then to get the brunt of the storm.

Marc and I are spending today and tomorrow bringing stuff inside, cleaning the gutters, etc. It is suppose to go right over our heads sometime Thursday afternoon. Calling for about 10 inches of rain and winds gusting close to 85, 90.... guess we'll have to keep our heads down..... and hold on.....

Do be careful, all of you in Isabel's path! We don't know hurricanes here in the Midwest, but we do know tornados and floods - and how disruptive they can be. We hope to see some posts that will let us know you're all ok!

Well, a leaking roof, a downed tree in the back yard (my favorite ), and finally with power (lost it 4 times, but now we have it, so we are better off than many - 2.6 million lost power in all) and a day later - all is well. We've a few flooded streets and many downed trees and roads throughout the city that look like leaf confetti was sprayed from the heavens. It will be interesting to see how the Outer banks faired. Ocracoke and north of there really took a pounding.

I saw a cute blurb on Jay Leno last night about the embedded reporters for the hurricane - embedded in walls, embedded in trees, etc. Those are some wacky dudes! We had 80 mph wind gusts, and that stuff IS SCARY!!

All safe in Eastern NC!!

Hey GG, I'm sure glad to know that you're ok. I'm anxiously waiting to hear how things are on Ocracoke. It's been our vacation spot for so many years and I'm worried about the people and places we have grown to love. So far I haven't seen much about anything farther south than Nag's Head. Take care! Karen, I do know that the owner of Howard's Pub was doing well and open for business at the height of the hurricane. He said only about 40% of the O'Cockers leave doing category 1 and 2 hurricanes, but when asked if he would leave if Isabel had stayed a Cat 5 - he said "Hell, Yeah!"

Interestingly (and comforting) nothing stronger than a Cat 3 has ever struck north of Myrtle beach, SC - per TWC.

Hey Diana

Glad to hear all has calmed down and relatively ok in your neck of the woods. We thought about you and all the others that we know that were in Isabel's path.

Speaking of embedded reporters...saw a funny one (not funny then but it is now that it's over) on FoxNews yesterday. The reporter, Jeff Goldblatt, I think, could hardly stand up and the wind was so strong it was taking down his pants.

Anyway, glad you're ok. Take care.

Wow! I have been watching the news and seeing the films of both the storm and the aftermath. It was bad, but it could have been so much worse! Thank God Isabel weakened.

We got her remnants last night and through today here in the Southern Tier of New York: wind and rain, but not too bad. Few tree branches down here and there, flickering lights, etc. Nothing worth even complaining about.

Hope those who have not checked in yet are OK.

Hello, All,

Rattlesnake Woman here, checking in from Chesapeake, VA! We (myself, my cat & my husband!) survived Hurricane Isabel & we were much, much more fortunate than most: the storm ripped the gutter off of the front of the house, and threw a few large branches from our neighbor's pine trees into our back yard, along with LOTS of pine straw, pine cones & leaves from other neighbor's trees. We lost power just before 10:30 on Thursday morning & finally got it back about 7:00 p.m. last night. We are quite used to camping but this is the first time we've had to do it at home! Our experience came in handy, though and we were also somewhat prepared: we had a generator which we used to keep our refrigerator running, so we didn't lose any food (or BEER! )and we had propane for our gas grill, so we were able to cook & have hot meals & COFFEE! All in all, we came through just fine & we are truly blessed.

My younger sister, her sons & her husband live in Buxton, a little over one mile from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. They stayed & rode out the hurricane on Hatteras Island & thank goodness, they came through it just fine - no flooding or any other kind of damage to their house & they are all OK, too. Hatteras Island itself - and Hatteras Village, in particular - are another story. It's only about 12 miles from Buxton to Hatteras Village & the ocean cut through and across Highway 12 all the way to the sound in THREE PLACES. Put them all together & you've got a new inlet that's about a quarter of a mile wide. The news footage on TV and the pictures in the paper are unbelievable, and the destruction just breaks my heart. When I spoke to my sister on the phone, she told me that "Hatteras Village is GONE." After I hung up the phone, I just sat down & cried as her words and reality sank in.

The local authorities don't know when or how they're going to be able to connect the Village to the rest of Hatteras Island & in the meantime, they are airlifting folks out of there. Some supplies have been ferried in from Swan Quarter over to Ocracoke Island and then over to Hatteras, but for all practical purposes, the Village residents are cut off from everyone else.

All the way up the Outer Banks, the wind, rain & flooding have been devastating. Many of these proud folks have lost EVERYTHING & in many cases, they will not be allowed to rebuild their homes, or businesses. My heart just aches every time I think about it.

I'm glad that this was "only" a Category 2 storm because if it had come ashore as a Cat4, I'm afraid that all of Hatteras Island would be gone now. As it is, I thank God that no one I love died in this storm & it has given me a renewed appreciation for lots of things that we otherwise take for granted - like electricity, clean running water, and just waking up in the morning.

I hope we soon hear from everyone else who was in the path of this storm, and that all are OK.

Well, guys - the Scott Party Palace is no more! Cecelia got a call from the Outer Banks and her vacation spot - a wonderful mobile home/was permanent - anchored down - cute as can be/now GONE! They said her trailer was either upside down or gone. Her Mom had gone down Tuesday evening and the steps were already gone and they were being covered by blowing seafoam as they tried to get appliances and prized fishing poles to safety. TWO DAYS BEFORE ISABEL HIT! The dunes between the park and the ocean were not substantial, so they knew the damage would be bad, Cecelia has such a good attitude about it though - "Oh, we've already picked out a new one!" There is no way to keep that girl from the Outer Banks beaches! Such is life on the OBX!

As Diane said, there is a great deal of damage between Nags Head and Hatteras Village. A new inlet (always a possibility with hurricanes and Nor'easters), a 400 foot section of Hwy 12 crumbled asphalt and 3 feet of sand. There was a picture in the paper of a normal height mailbox less than a foot from the ground - Hmmmmmm, sturdy mailbox post! Hatteras Village was the quaintest little fishing village, too!

NOW, regarding the BIG sprawling beachfront homes that are occupied for only two weeks out of the year, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth, that have owners that petition for state and federal tax money to renourish beaches after a storm because they built to close to shore - WELL, why not ask if we can spend our money to make it safe for you to eat lunch in the median of an interstate! Oooops - SORRY got off on a tangent! Don't mind if ya build one, just don't ask me to foot the bill to rebuild it after Mother Nature has spoken!

I am so glad that no more people were hurt or lost their lives. I have a new respect for a..."just a category 2" hurricane!

Here is a picture of the new inlet which has made Hatteras Village an island. They plan to fill it back in with sand and rebuild the road.

Karen W. - Ocracoke made out well - they did lose one of the wild ponies - mustangs descended from the Spanish. The northern end ferry route to Hattteras is out of service, but being fixed. The guy at Howard's Pub said folks were arriving for drinks after the hurricane in boats (Those crazy O'cockers). The biggest impact to them will be economic, since Labor Day to New Year's business was their profits for the year.
