I do benefits for all religions---I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality.
~~~Bob Hope 1903-2003
Thanks for the memories...
Amen to that!
Bob... you will be missed by millions of people. You were always one of my favorites.
God Bless You, and "Thank you so much!"
Saw him twice in Vietnam. Christmas 1966 and Christmas 1967. He did those shows out of the goodness of his heart, and not for any gain. We loved him for that. And Maggie, we adopted as one of us. In '67 there was intelligence that the VC were going to set up mortars and shell during his show. Army wanted to cancel - he said hell no, show goes on! Soldiers since WWII are grateful and beholden to you Bob, and may you be playing golf and cracking jokes to our Lord today. |
Great story, Bill. Thanks for sharing. Here's one of his quotes on golf:
Golf is a game that needlessly prolongs the lives of some of our most useless citizens.
I suppose he could have been referring to himself, but somehow we all know that he was one of life's most useful citizens. |
Yup. Volunteered to go over, volunteered to stay over. Got there in October '66 and came home on 6 June '68....landed for refueling in Alaska to pick up a paper and learn RFK had been assasinated. Felt like getting on the plane and goin back to Nam. What a home-coming. Ups: Got to see Bobe Hope twice, take R&R in Hawaii in '67 and R&R in Australia in '68, and was offered a field commission (which I refused). Downs: lost some good friends, went through Tet Offensive (in which we kicked their butts totally everywhere but media tells the world it was a huge defeat), got myself the Purple Heart, Martin Luther King was assasinated while I was still over there. Back to the subject.......Bob Hope was loved by all soldiers everywhere. We knew he was doing it for US, and no other reason. Everybody had forgotten about us, or was protesting us. HE and his troup made us feel like we were not forgotten and like we WERE appreciated. |
No... not everyone. There were some people who may have disapproved of and protested the war, but did not forget the guys who were over there. Some of us just wanted the whole thing to end so you guys could come home.
...and Thank you! |
