Hello everone, I'm a newbie. It's nice to meet other LOTM/ DDL fans! I was just wondering how LOTM would have turned out if Michael Mann had stuck to Cooper's plot with Uncas and Cora falling in love with each other, and Hawkeye falling in love with no one. Do you think it would have worked?

Madeleine Stowe got really up close and personal with Eric Schweig at one point, in the scene where she's bandaging Uncas, but I didn't see any chemistry between them. Who cares about sticking to the novel's plot- I think Hawkeye and Cora were meant to be!

Hollywood can make almost anything believable. Think of the the scene between Cora and Uncas in the surgery, before Hawkeye asks if he's tired of holding hands with Miss Munro. Yes, it could very well have worked. They are both good actors and with the right direction... Just think of Uncas' smouldering eyes, and the shy timid looks Cora manages before "the kiss." It could have worked. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

Incidently, I'm reading the book again as well.

I'm reviving an old post for want of a new topic. Yes I did notice the lingering look Alexandria gave Uncas. She was married, but she wasn't dead, at least not then. Could have been some not so "innocent" thoughts running around in her head.
But LOOK at Uncas; could you blame her?

Yes, Adele, I did notice that! And what really ticks me off, is that he hardly seems to care! Jeez ...

Thank you Doc Mary for coming to my defense! SURELY others have noticed this as well but perhaps are too proper and mannerly to mention it. <sigh> A room full of Alices!
But I had not noticed "chicken legs" Cameron!
Okay okay either we've watched too many soaps in our lifetimes or we have scrutinized this movie waaaaayyyyyy beyond what it was intended. :)
Stephanie

Scrutinized the movie too much?? Nahhhhhh........by the way, anyone happen to notice that the Huron 54th from the left in the village scene looks like he has an ingrown toe nail?.....

Dearest Doc Marykins:

Alexandria suffered from Chicken Legs Cameron's Cabin lust, you say?
Hey! Could there be yet another mulatto in this sordid Tale of
Two Mohicans???? (One of them kids had dark eyes ...)

Somehow I just KNEW you were in the shadows of Stephanie's dark thoughts.

Stephanie speaks the truth! Check out the look old Alex gives
Uncas when he shows up for dinner...her lips say "welcome"
but her eyes say "Hubba-Hubba, Big Boy!!" And who could
blame the poor woman?? Have you taken a good look at
Mister "Chicken Legs" Cameron lately??

Kissys!

Hi Sidony - welcome to Mohicanland!

As far as the original tale goes....I loved it! I think the way Cooper wrote about Uncas' subtle attentions to Cora was very beautiful, and I still think of it as one of those classic, tragic, doomed-from-the-start love stories. However, in terms of the movie, there is no way that DDL couldn't have been the central romantic figure - his presence is just way too overpowering. However, I do think that the movie could only have gained by providing a little more substance to the Uncas/Alice relationship - not necessarily by way of a love scene, but just perhaps a little more interaction between the two characters.

Just my 2 cents....

HM
